Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom, Kelvin Ringmaster: David Eskie Wrangler: Chief Stoker Report: Secs with thanks to Uncle
Weather: Sunny with pleasant breeze.
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 39 Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile on highway 55 in An Nhất, Long Điền, at famous local restaurant Bánh Hỏi An Nhứt for Chalk Talk by Secs (edited): “Walk several hundred metres along busy highway, carefully avoid traffic, turn left at red tape into rice fields and follow circular route, coming back into the village from behind the restaurant. Total distance ~7km.” Highlight 1: Fashionable harriettes wearing áo bà ba (short shirts popular in southwestern VN countryside, worn with long silk trousers) and nón lá (conical hats). Highlight 2: Feasting on local delicacy bánh hỏi after strolling through the rice fields taking photos, watching kites (not drones!), wondering where all the ducks have gone, and swapping greetings with friendly farmers as their tractors lay mud trails between rice fields (not laid by buffalo as previously thought!). Highlight 3: The only mountains we saw all day were on the horizon. The trail was culturally interesting, truly ‘sedate’ and a very welcome difference for VTH3! Special interest 1: An Nhất is listed in official census documents by its original name: An Nhứt. It’s a rural commune and village in Long Điền district, BR-VT with a population of 3,928 in an area of 5.981 km² (pop. density 656.7/km²), according to latest (2009) census statistics. Special interest 2: Bánh hỏi is rice vermicelli woven into intricate layers and served with chopped scallions and garlic chives sauteed in oil, served with sliced cucumber, carrots and diced meat ‘fingers’. Down Down: Bánh Hỏi An Nhứt restaurant – an incredibly popular eatery established more than 30 years ago, hence still using original commune spelling An Nhứt i/o today’s An Nhất. Refreshments: Bánh hỏi, water melon, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Relocated to entrance to the night market for more space since the restaurant was very busy. Trail rated 10+/10. “Excellent trail”. Hares Secs, Chippy and Bull Ant thanked. Virgins: Ms. Lotus from Vung Tau (first trail was last week but missed the circle); and Sam from South Africa (friend of Royce)welcomed. Returnees Pineapple Bill who’d been back in Ireland and Ms. Nga welcome back On on on: Mr. C’s Speakeasy Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. PLEASE REMEMBER: We can all help to keep run fees as low as possible by cancelling registration if suddenly unable to attend (the mismanagement committee can then adjust the transport and/or meal order if necessary). “On On”

Weather: 30C. Hot, occasional shade.
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 25 Trail: Carry truck and eco-cart to Ngoc Dung restaurant, 77 Tran Phu. Offload eskies then Chalk Talk by Secs (edited): “Walk 100m to Chinese-style temple (Hưng Thắng Tự pagoda), up 622 steps, left at top and follow red ribbons about 1.5km along Hem 444 until arriving at left turn in the road that goes up a steep slope to a temple. Go through the back of the temple and follow the Red Ribbons into the jungle. Follow the markers along a rocky boulder strewn trail with great view until reaching the large ‘cross of Jesus’ just below summit of third mountain peak behind the ‘Church of Bai Dau’ and 32m statue of Đức Mẹ Bãi Dâu (‘Our lady of Bai Dau’ aka ‘Mother Mary and child’). Descend ~1,200 steps past ‘stations of the cross’ to Tran Phu then across the road and down Ngoc Dung restaurant steps to beach level for Down Down. Total distance ~3 km.” Highlights: Fishing fleet and shipyard views from Hem 444. High tide at Down Down for enjoyable swimming with locals. Special interest: The address on Hưng Thắng Tự pagoda gateway is ‘Bãi dâu, Vũng Tàu’. Online searching translates the area as ‘Mulberry beach’, but local folklore calls it, “Clouds on the mountain”, aka ‘Heaven’s Gate’. Down Down: Beach level, Ngoc Dung restaurant, 77 Tran Phu. Refreshments: Pork noodles, pineapple chunks, water melon. Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 11, 10, 13: “A bit tough but beatiful”, “Nice variety of scenery”. LONG HAI MOUNTAINS-HONG DUNG PEAK
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant, Coyote (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Chom Chom (group photo), Chippy Asset Wrangler: Chook Ringmaster: Chom Chom Report: Secs with thanks to Uncle
Weather: Sunny, breezy, warm.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 22 Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile outside al fresco café at foot of Destiny Mountain (part of Long Hai Mountains chain). Chalk talk by Secs reminded all that today’s trail was “live” so anyone getting lost should go back to the nearest red ribbon and wait for one of the live hares to show the way. Then it was “On on” to the first (conveniently handrailed) section of ~500 stone steps onto the mountain. Turned left after the steps ended near a small homestead and continued following the ribbons and live hares along a dense leaf-littered, mud and rock strewn trail to lookout rocks at the highly decorative Non Tiên pagoda on Hong Dung peak. We explored the pagoda’s many shrines and nearby caves, enjoyed panoramic views and took many photos on and from the lookout rocks, then followed an often slippery descent over hundreds of rocks to go ‘full circle’ back to the eco resort at ground level. Total distance ~5km. Highlights: Panoramic views and intricate shrines at Non Tiên pagoda lookout rocks on Hon Dung peak. Down Down: Ngoc Xuong eco-tourism resort, group 6/70, Hai Binh hamlet, Long Hai (near mountain end of 3 February Street). Refreshments: Banh mi, veg, dip. Watermelon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 10, 9/10, 11/10. “Great”, “Very interesting”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant, Coyote applauded. Virgin Nguyen Trường, boyfriend of last week’s virgin Nhi, welcomed. One very special returnee this week was Sergey, a Hasher who was part of VTH3 going all the way back to at least Run 69 and who hadn’t returned for 24 years. After saying a few words he kindly presented the Hares with a variety of vintage Hash T-Shirts from yesteryear. On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration. PLEASE REMEMBER: Hashmobile seats allocated in order of registration but CAN’T BE GUARANTEED if booked less than 24 hours before run start. Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Secs (group photo), Chippy Asset Wrangler: Chook Ringmaster: Soggy Bottom Report: Secs with thanks to Uncle
Weather: High cloud, not too hot.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant, Chom Chom @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 24 Trail: Dismounted 2 km before Minh Dam Base at Thien Vien Truc Lam Chan Nguyen pagoda, aka ‘Monkey Pagoda’ since hordes of local monkeys realized it’s a rich source of food from tourists. But the only monkeys sighted today were at the end of the trail, not the beginning (see ‘Lowlights’ below). Chalk talk by Secs then around temple for a steep climb over well-defined rock steps and scattered rocks, passing a temple and small shacks then more hillside dwellings and shrines at the "double rocks" summit. Squeezed between the huge double rocks and continued across the ridge over many smaller rocks and leaf litter, then steep downhill jungle trail over mud, rocks, rock steps with occasional hand rails and corrugated concrete past Bach Van Dinh shrine to Minh Dam Base parking area. Total distance ~3 km. Highlights: Temple and hillside dwellings at top of climb scattered with shrines, altars and many picturesque religious artefacts and relics. Panoramic views of resort developments along the coastline. Welcome sea breeze over lookout rocks. Lowlights: Aggressive monkeys in Down Down area (some even attacking young tourists as they exited a car). Down Down: Minh Dam Base parking area. Refreshments: BBQ pork, vermicelli, green veg, Ms. Kim’s famous coffee cake. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, Banh Kep biscuits. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 10, 10, 10/10 “Superb”, “Challenging”. Hares Secs and Chippy applauded. Only one virgin Ms. Nhi who was introduced by Chippy.
