CẦN GIỜ - MONKEY ISLAND

Weather: Hot, very sunny, shade under the mangroves.
Hash Cash: 9.30am run fees Chom Chom, Secs @ Mr. C’s, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1
Total Hashers: 36
Trail: 9.30am start for a long and interesting day! Own transport and taxis via traffic jams to Vung Tau Inland Waterway Port (ferry terminal) at 127C Tran Phu. Ferry to Cần Giờ - Monkey Island mangrove biosphere reserve approx halfway to Ho Chi Minh City. 10-minute bus ride to trail start at Rừng Sác (mangrove forest) entrance. Chalk Talk by Secs (EN) and Chippy (VN) warned about aggressive monkeys (long tailed macaques) that are known to steal anything they can. Followed trail to view saltwater crocodiles then shared shelter from rain with monkeys and mosquitos(!) before longer walk to guerilla base model; then back to start. Total distance ~5km. Bus to nearby coffee shop for Down Down, then back to terminal for ferry to Vung Tau.
Highlights:
  • Salt water crocodiles ‘resting’ in the mangrove swamps.
  • Intricate models of Viet Cong guerilla camps and related wartime activity, some with audio visual support.
  • Socialising on the bus and ferry rides!
  • Landscape view of ‘VTH3’s mountains’ on return trip: Thi Vai, Nui Dinh, Long Hai, Long Son, Big Mtn, Small Mtn.
Special interest: Can Gio Island & Biosphere Reserve (Monkey Island) in Ho Chi Minh City (vietnamdiscovery.com)
Down Down: Ky Nam resort (near beach).
Refreshments: Bahn mi and a variety of goodies from resident Hash foodie Ms. Kim. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 10,12/10 “Very interesting”. Hare/organiser Chippy deservedly congratulated. 2 virgins from Australia - Billy and Manny. No returnees this week

NÚI MINH ĐẦM - HÒN ĐÁ CHẺ (SPLIT ROCK)

Report: Secs with thanks to Uncle
Weather: Very hot, some breeze on the mountain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 36
Trail: Boarded Hashmobile Mr C’s Speakeasy (3b Le Ngoc Han). Collected out of town Hashers. Bypassed the main entrance gate to Minh Dam Base and dismounted several hundred metres further along the sealed road. Chalk talk by Secs (edited): “Follow red markers along the sand/dirt track into the jungle. Relatively short trail (~2.5 km), but steep in parts with a mix of dirt, dead leaves and stone steps. Pass the small house two-thirds of the way to top, then continue over boulders to flagpoles on split lookout rocks. Panoramic views and photo opportunities. Descend on hundreds of stone steps past small museum and Hòn Đá Chẻ regulations notice to Minh Dam Base parking area for Down Down.”
Highlights: Helpful rope handrails on steepest parts of trail. Cool breezes at lookout rocks. Historic war relics museum near trail end (closed today). 
Lowlights: Pesky monkeys at the down-down in the carpark
Down Down: Minh Dam Base parking area.
Circle: Trail rated highly 11/10. Hares Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy,  applauded. No virgins or returnees this week. Chippy announced that next week would be a 9:30am start for an all day trip to Monkey Island Cần Giờ
Refreshments: Delicious pork noodles and coffee cake from our Hash cook Ms. Kim. Watermelon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.

NUI DINH – TEMPLE TOWN LOOP​

Weather: Sunny with a little breeze.

Total Hashers: 28
Trail: Passed Ngọc Sơn Dinh temple start point in Nui Dinh Base Area to show Hashmobile driver the Down Down location at end of ‘Temple Boulevard’ (A-B trail), then back to start and dismounted for Chalk Talk by Secs.
Climbed ~650 stone steps through picturesque Ngọc Sơn Dinh temple grounds, then through another temple (with monks offering fruit!) onto Dinh mountain. Followed red tapes (some hidden by fallen trees!) along jungle trail mostly dirt, rocks and leaf litter.
Up and across the mountain over one small stream and a sealed road; past several temples, two burial grounds with ornamental sarcophagi, a tribe of grey monkeys, then a series of long descents with hundreds of stone steps and painted red/yellow handrails back to road level and Down Down area. Total distance ~3 km.
Highlights: Picturesque trail, many stone steps but no major rock climbs! Spacious Down Down area with very hospitable Nun who distributed small denominations of lucky money to every Hasher, a lovely lady who wouldn’t accept payment for the use of her facilities.
Down Down: Covered shed with tiled floor and chairs in communal rest area at end of ‘Temple Boulevard’.
Refreshments: Ms. Kim’s delicious Pate so and pizza rolls in addition to a very nice coffee cake. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, longans. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 11,12/10 “Good”, “Wonderful”. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant applauded. No Virgins. Returnee Chom Chom who explained he had been busy being a respectable family man

BIG MOUNTAIN - POWER LINES TRAIL

Weather: Hot, but shade on the mountain, some breeze.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Chom Chom, Secs @ Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 24
Trail:  Chalk talk by Secs then walked up Le Ngoc Han to Hem 105 and up steps/slope to Vi Ba. Turned right and followed red eco tapes for ~100 metres then left up off-road track at former M90 factory. Continued up lower mountain track to power line trail and climbed to summit (Ho May Park wall). Followed dirt track around to left then down rocky slope to plateau crossroads and turned right along waterfall trail to emerge near top of Vi Ba. Turned left and down past army camp and nuoc mia stalls to distinctive yellow Bodharama temple entrance then around to left and 89 steps down to affluent residential area and downhill to Tran Phu. Turned left for several hundred metres then left again behind ‘DoubleTree by Hilton’ construction site and back to start point for Down Down. Total distance ~5 km.
Highlights: Views over Vung Tau city from Ho May Park wall. Views over Ganh Rai Bay during descent of Big Mountain. Mr. C’s legendary wood-fired pizza at the down-down
Down Down: Mr. C’s Speakeast, 3b Le Ngoc Han.
Refreshments: Variety of wood-fired pizzas, Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Ms. Kim’s cake. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: No circle this week.
