Chalk talk by Secs (edited): Walk 1-2 km through the hamlet (“left turn, right turn, left turn, right turn, repeat: on-on!”) then several hundred stone steps onto Destiny Mountain (part of the ‘Long Hai’ chain), one section with convenient handrails. Follow Hares and/or red ribbons across the mountain along duff-strewn jungle trail to lookout rocks at a highly decorative temple with several beautiful shrines on Hong Dung peak. Complete ‘full circle’ with steep, often slippery descent over moss-covered rocks, a dry creek bed, past an open air café (“Xin chao, xin chao!”) and back through Hai Binh hamlet to the eco resort. Total distance ~5km. Highlights: Panoramic views and intricate shrines at lookout rocks on Hon Dung peak. Several other eye-catching shrines and artefacts scattered around the mountainside. HỒ TRÀM – NÚI TẦM BỒ
Hares: Secs, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Secs (group photo), Chippy Ringmaster: David Report: Uncle
Weather: Overcast, relatively cool, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (Paper Garden restaurant side). Total Hashers: 30 Trail: Past an ever-growing number of resorts in Ho Tram Town, Xuyen Moc and dismounted outside ‘Trai (campsite) 584’, one of several camping and glamping grounds along the busy coastal road to Binh Chau and now under new ownership. Chalk Talk by Secs reminded everyone to watch for heavy traffic before turning off-road approx 500 metres back towards Ho Tram. Followed mainly old trail and marker tapes along a flat, winding sandy track through trees and shrubbery towards higher ground inland. Soil replaced sand as we continued upwards until the boulders became bigger and more plentiful as we neared the summit lookout rocks. One last scramble over several very large boulders – aided by some strategically placed and very welcome knotted string – and we’d reached the summit of Núi Tầm Bồ (Tam Bo mountain): ~100m AGL with panoramic views over the local area and ocean. Then back to Trai 584 (now named ‘Nha Go Camping’) for Down Down including group photo and Circle. Total distance ~3 km. Highlights: Superb views from top of Tam Bo mountain lookout rocks. Down Down location with new owner, new name, freshly made furniture and nice, clean beach. Down Down: Formerly ‘Trai 584’ now renamed ‘Nha Go Camping’ along the coastal road several kilometres beyond The Grand resort (Ho Tram). Refreshments: BBQ pork banh mi with mixed veg accompaniments. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks (thanks to Rooster for chop-chopping!). Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 10, 9.9/10. “Good weather”, “Beautiful trail”. Hares Chippy and Secs applauded. Hash Virgin Hans (Germany) welcomed. Sprinkles by Bishop. Returnees Ha, Thuy, Tien, Thuy (all VN); Danny (USA) “No excuse for four years absence!” welcomed back. A big “Well done” to Trainee Ringmaster David for another good job! On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Hares: Secs, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Secs (group photo), Chippy Ringmaster: N/A Report: Uncle
Weather: Humid but mostly shady trail.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Stuart @ Giấy (Paper) Garden Restaurant, Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 21 Trail: Swimming pool café closed so Hashmobile continued over bridge and dismounted at roadside rest area opposite nuoc mia stalls and concreted entrance road to monastery. Chalk talk by Secs (edited) away from main mountain access road: “Continue along monastery access road then into jungle and follow red tapes along dirt track circular trail, then rocky path and dried stream bed, slowly increasing ascent angle to final steep climb to temples and lookout rocks for photos. Then continue down (many small rocks and steep descent in places) until final concreted track to start point and across road for Down Down. Total distance ~4km.” Highlights: Several different lookouts including ‘Helicopter’ and ‘A di đà phật’ rocks. Picturesque pagodas, temples and shrines around the mountainside. Special interest: Three Hashers found ‘new trail’ and produced Hash equation Brit+Aussie+VN=12km trail (instead of 4!). Lesson learned - don’t overtake live Hares unless you know the trail! Down Down: Rest area on roadside opposite entrance road to monastery between bridge and lake. Refreshments: BBQ pork, noodles. Fruit chunks, water melon slices. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: N/A. Two Hash Virgins Bui Phuoc and Dinh Thao; one Visitor Harry (UK/Taiwan Hashes). BIG MOUNTAIN - REUNIFICATION TRAIL #2
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chom Chom (group photo), Chippy Ringmaster: David Report: Uncle
Weather: Humid, but lots of shade on the mountain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Giấy Garden Restaurant, Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 16 Trail: Chalk talk by Secs then walked up Le Ngoc Han to Hem 105 and up steps/slope to Vi Ba. Turned right and followed red eco tapes for ~100 metres then left up off-road track at former M90 factory. Continued up lower mountain track to power line trail and climbed to summit (Ho May Park wall). Followed dirt track around to left then down rocky slope to plateau crossroads and turned right along waterfall trail to emerge near top of Vi Ba. Turned left and down past army camp and nuoc mia stalls to distinctive yellow Bodharama temple entrance then around to left and 89 steps down to affluent residential area and downhill to Tran Phu. Turned left for several hundred metres then left again behind ‘DoubleTree by Hilton’ construction site and back to start point for Down Down. Total distance ~5 km. Highlights: Views over Vung Tau city from Ho May Park wall. Views over Ganh Rai Bay during descent of Big Mountain. Lavish Down Down buffet. Special interest: Usually called the Big Mountain ‘Power Line trail’, today’s run #1163 was the second of two consecutive ‘Reunification’ trails because actual 50th Reunification anniversary was 30 April: midway between runs 1162 and 1163. Down Down: Giấy (Paper) Garden Restaurant, 5 Le Ngoc Han. Refreshments: Lavish seafood and meat buffet with salads and fried rice (and many ‘extras’!). Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trainee Ringmaster David did a credible job despite all Hashers seated around the same table due lack of usable space(!). The trail was rated ‘hard yakka’ (but too noisy for this scribe to hear actual ratings!), and Hares Secs, Chippy and Bull Ant applauded. Returnees Velcro (absent 2 months) and Docker (4 months) welcomed back and their excuses for absence were applauded! Circle announcement: Hasher Ms Kim Hue baked three chocolate cakes but was unable to deliver herself because she was involved in a traffic accident before today’s run and taken to hospital. All Hashers send their best wishes for a full and speedy recovery (and the cakes were delicious – thank you very much!). On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run.
