Jungle path up to temple at top of mountain. Down the other side of the temple back to the jungle path to the second temple then follow a narrow path through bamboo to the foot of the mountain. Follow red ribbons through long grass until arriving at the village and then short walk to the down-down spot at the end of the road. Highlights: Spectacular views from the first temple of the surrounding area. Many photos next to the “Snake Head” rock. Dance party on the bus home to the sound of “Chippy’s Adventures. Weather: Hot, high broken cloud. Shady trail.
Hash Cash: 11 am run fees Secs, Chom Chom @ Nắng Vũng Tàu Giấy Garden café restaurant, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 27 Trail: Early start for trip to Phu My. Dismount Nui Thi Vai. Chalk Talk Chippy (VN/EN edited): “Welcome to VTH3 run 1117. Go 300m along road then left onto the mountain. Follow red tapes up, around and back down to start point. Total distance ~5 km.” Jungle trail well-marked with red ribbons. The higher the trail, the more challenging it became. Finally reached the 200+ rock steps to the first of several lookout points at the top! All the usual selfies and wefies were taken, then we crossed the summit and followed another rocky, duff-covered trail down to 1,340 winding granite steps with handrails to the finish at Lower Temple gate with Down Down rest area nearby. Highlights: Music from solar-powered units amongst the rocks near the summit. Awesome views from different lookout points. Water and herbal drinks courtesy friendly monks along the trail. Friendly banter with other groups on the trail. Special interest: Three sacred pagodas over 100 years old: Linh Son Lien Tri Temple (Lower Temple), Linh Son Hong Phuc Temple (Middle Temple), and Linh Son Buu Thien Temple (Upper Ancestral Temple). Also a huge ‘sky gate’ (aka Heavenly Gate) behind the upper temple: two 7-8m vertical rocks in the middle of a small path. Refreshments: Sticky rice and chicken drumsticks with veg fillings and dipping sauce. Water melon, bananas. Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water. Circle: Timed out in preference to hammocks and casual socializing after such an arduous, challenging trail. Hasher of the week: Hash virgin Phong, who showed a willingness to help from loading the bus to helping fellow Hashers struggle over large rocks at the summit. Hash family of the week: Yoga trainer Nhung and delightful children Tony (7yo), “Champion climber” Annie (4yo), and little sister Emma (2yo) who conquered the entire mountain on her mum’s back! BIG MOUNTAIN - CAMBODIAN TEMPLE TRAIL

Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 36 Trail: 4 eco carts to 33 Trần Xuân Độ via 750 Trần Phú. Chalk Talk by Secs then red marker tapes onto the hillside and past two temples incl. one with Khmer-style intricate stone handrail carvings to make an all-up total 611 steps! Continued uphill along winching rails until paused ‘en masse’ to search for alternate trail around newly-claimed land, making 2 trails for the price of 1: “On On!” We eventually reached the summit and crossed Hem 444 aka ‘Ho May Park road’ for southern side downhill leg. Over broken park wall then a long and sometimes very steep and rock-strewn forest trail until finally emerging onto sealed road at a Vi Ba hairpin above the army camp. Then more downhill past the coffee shops, through Chùa Bồ Đề (Bodharama temple at 25 Vi Ba) and residential area to Trần Phú. Finally circled behind the Hilton to Nắng VT/Paper Garden at 5 Lê Ngọc Hân for Down Down. Total distance ~5 km. Highlights: Views over shipyards on the uphill leg, and Ganh Rai Bay aka Vung Tau bay on the descent. An ‘extra trail’ to bypass an unexpected land ownership claim(!). Sumptuous Down Down spread at Nắng Vũng Tàu’s stylishly renovated Giấy Garden café. Down Down: Giấy (Paper) Garden café. Refreshments: Rice/egg salad, beef slices, ‘shaking chicken’ (gà lúc lắc), hot chips(!), calamari; pineapple chunks, water melon; Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water.Circle: Trail rated 9.5,10,10+/10; “enjoyable”, “terrific”, “good”. Hares Secs and Chippy thanked. Hash Virgins Nguyet/Julia (ex-Thai Binh/Hanoi) and Trang welcomed. An encouraging 9 Returnees welcomed back. New Names ‘Cindy’ and ‘Wind’ recognised. MINH DAM - MONKEY PAGODA TRAIL

Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs / Chom Chom @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 32 Trail: Disembarked Hashmobile at the Monkey pagoda, several kms before Minh Dam mountain turn-off. Chalk Talk by Secs, then followed red tapes up long steep jungle trail over steps, rocks and rocky steps(!) to the mountain dwellers’ residences near two huge vertical rocks just before the lookout rock. Squeezed between the rocks then continued jungle trail over fallen leaves (“duff”) and steep, rocky descent in parts to familiar Minh Dam parking area for Down Down. Total distance ~3km. Highlights: Squeezing between the two vertical rocks near the summit. Stunning panoramic views of new resort developments along the coastline north and south; lovely cool breeze over lookout rock. Down Down: Minh Dam parking area. Refreshments: Banh mi with pork, veg, fruit. Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water. Circle: No Circle today but trail rated 10/10 by acclaim!
