Total Hashers: 24 Trail: Dismounted 2 km before Minh Dam Base at Thien Vien Truc Lam Chan Nguyen pagoda, aka ‘Monkey Pagoda’ since hordes of local monkeys realized it’s a rich source of food from tourists. Chalk talk by Secs then around the temple for a steep climb over well-defined rock steps and scattered rocks, passing a temple and small shacks then more hillside dwellings and shrines at the "double rocks" summit. Squeezed between the huge double rocks and continued across the ridge over many smaller rocks and leaf litter, then steep downhill jungle trail over mud, rocks, rock steps with occasional hand rails and corrugated concrete past Bach Van Dinh shrine to Minh Dam Base parking area. Total distance ~3 km. Highlights: Temple and hillside dwellings at top of climb scattered with shrines, altars and many picturesque religious artefacts and relics. Panoramic views of resort developments along the coastline. Welcome sea breeze over lookout rocks. . Down Down: Minh Dam Base parking area. Refreshments: BBQ pork banh mi, Ms. Kim’s famous coffee cake and pineapple pies. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, Banh Kep biscuits. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 10, 10, 10/10 “Superb”, “Challenging”. Hares Bull Ant, Secs and Chippy applauded. On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Weather: Hot but mostly shady trail. Thankfully no rain for the difficult descent
Hash Cash: 11 am run fees Bull Ant @ Mr. C’s Speakeast, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 40 Trail: With an early start, the Hashmobile arrived with what seemed to be plenty of time for the long and steep trail. The starting point was where we would finish and have the down-down, approximately 1km from the base of Toc Tien mountain. Chook delivered the Chalk talk and as usual emphasised the importance of following the red ribbons. It was then On On and after a flat walk to the base of the mountain, it was up, up and up. Along the way there were some spectacular views especially upon reaching the peak, where some kind souls had provided a bamboo ladder to scale the rock rather than dangerously climbing rotten tree branches. After all the photos were taken, it was time to descend. The way down was the same as the way up but for some people a little bit trickier. Highlights: The biggest highlight of the day was Miss Kim's birthday. It was celebrated in style and continued the whole way back on the bus. Down Down: Small cashew farm near the base of Toc Tien Refreshments: Banh Mi, pineapple chunks, water melon slices. Miss Kim had also prepared her own birthday cake which was a delicious Tiramisu and big enough to cater for everyone...some may have even gotten an extra piece!! This was all washed down with the usual Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, and mineral water. Circle: The circle started with a presentation of flowers from Hash Lite to Miss Kim followed by the singing of Happy Birthday. We had a number of Virgins, Returnees and visitors, all of which were warmly welcomed, and then it was time to board the Hashmobile and head back to Mr C's. Rain just as circle was about to start Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 39 Trail: Hashmobile climbed to the top of Núi Dinh Road and then took the asphalt lane on the right next to Chùa Diệu Linh temple. Disembarked at Quán cô Hường coffee shop next to a lake. Chalk talk by Secs: An old trail revisited, follow red ribbons in to the jungle opposite coffee shop up to a sealed path, once on the path take turn left for 100m until more red ribbons indicate another left turn. Follow this trail to a couple of lookouts. The trail will loop around and exit on the same path - turn right at the path and follow that path until back at the down-down at the coffee shop next to the lake Highlights: Several different lookouts requiring climbing some rickety ladders affording some spectacular views with plenty of photo opportunities Down Down: Quán cô Hường coffee shop next to a lake Refreshments: Pork noodles, pineapple chunks, water melon slices. Miss Kim’s legendary coffee cake and Banh mi. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Due to the rain a quick group photo was taken and then valiant Ringmaster David performed the circle on the bus. Hares were applauded, four virgins were welcomed including Peter from the UK, Phương, Khánh and Đậu from Vung Tau. Weather: Humid and overcast.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Chom Chom @ Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 21 Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile at roadside rest area opposite (now closed) nuoc mia stalls and concreted entrance road to monastery. Chalk talk by Secs (edited) away from main mountain access road: “Continue along monastery access road then into jungle and follow red tapes along dirt track circular trail, then rocky path and dried stream bed, slowly increasing ascent angle to final steep climb to temples and lookout rocks for photos. Then continue down (many small rocks and steep descent in places) until final concreted track to start point and across road for Down Down. Total distance ~4.5km.” Highlights: Several different lookouts including ‘Helicopter’ and ‘A di đà phật’ rocks. Picturesque pagodas, temples and shrines around the mountainside. Special interest: Three experienced Hashers found a ‘new trail’ taking a virgin Hasher with them and were nowhere to be seen at the down-down. After some consternation from the group since there is no mobile coverage we were pleased to finally get through to them and find out that they have found their way to Suối Đá. Lesson learned - don’t overtake live Hares unless you know the trail! Down Down: Rest area on roadside opposite entrance road to monastery between bridge and lake. Refreshments: BBQ pork bahn mi, pineapple chunks, water melon slices. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Unfortunately due to having to collect the errant Hashers at Suối Đá, including the Ringmaster, there was no circle this week.
