Some Hashers prepared their raincoats and hoped to use them, but after we disembarked our “Hashmobiles” at 491 Tran Phu, the weather got sunny. Hashers were ready to go to the meeting point, but got distracted by an old lady trying to convince them not to follow the Hare if they wished to go to the mountain! Hare Basil led everyone through the village to the starting point, and when everyone arrived, he started the chalk talk. The trail is easy today for Hash Virgin Grandma Roi; we start by going up the slope, and then follow the red tape through area with barking dog. Then go up the mountain full of tall grass which is overgrown after a few weeks of rain. Co-Hare Mr Hoang unfortunately couldn’t join today, so Basil stuck with the last group, with Viking and Terminator taking care of the first groups. As we reached the last stretch, we walked down to Tran Phu street while greeted by villagers and kids, and the Hashers decided to walk back to Hon Ru Ri instead of taking the “Hashmobiles”. Some even managed to buy seafood for tonight's dinner! As we walked a long way along Tran Phu, and realised it is still far, half the Hashers decided to take “Hashmobiles” while the other half run and walk to reach Hon Ru Ri. When we all get to the Down Down and the time is exactly 17:00, Basil started the Group Picture and then the Circle. After Welcome Message, we got “Ki Ki” who volunteered to rate the trail 10/10, with reasons explained by Lady D being good weather and long walk to Hon Ru Ri. Then we welcomed Hash Virgin Grandma Roi who is 75, with grandson Erik as translator (he also sponsored her to the Hash). We now introduced the opposite of Sinners: “Saints” - all those who decided to walk and run back to Hon Ru Ri, so a lot of Saints in the Circle! And then Sinners, which Basil took because he also joined the “Hashmobile” group. The “Astro Family” convinced Basil to name their final family member, so Carlo will now be known as “Astro Dad” even though he only join 5 times so far! And finally an announcement for next week's trail: it will be on Small Mountain, to Jesus statue, and Basil volunteered to set it. Also, if anyone wants to go inside the Jesus statue, you must wear something to cover the skin. We'll meet at Hon Ru Ri next Sunday, as usual: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! Hares: Uncle, SamSon Hash Cash: Basil Hash Flash: Fot tret, Basil, Uncle Mobile medic: Syd-knee Foodie: Mother Teresa Ringmaster: SamSon Report: Uncle With a torrential downpour lasting until just 15 mins before departure, a surprisingly large group of hardy hashers turned up at Hon Ru Ri for the trip to Minh Dam Secret Zone - and with Terminator, Mother Teresa and Superteen waiting at the Seaview - that gave a "respectable" total of 31, despite such deplorable weather! It was still raining as we dismounted at the start point - making it one of only a very few times we've experienced any real interference from the elements during this year's wet season (although there have been plenty of near misses!). Undeterred, we "plasticked up" with raincoats and umbrellas and headed uphill towards the car park, with SamSon as live hare for the first part of the journey (Uncle had gone ahead to mark the second part of the trail from the car park to the lookout rocks). Some called it a day at the car park, but most finally reached the lookout rocks - only to find the weather gods were definitely not being kind to us today (see photos below)! We sloshed our way back down the muddy track to the car park and "dined" on Mother Teresa's delicious open sandwiches, washed down with a San Mig or three (chips and oj for junior hashers), before it was decided to hold a truncated Circle on the bus back to town because the rain clearly wasn't going to stop, and shelter was limited! So we loaded up and set off, with Shaky scoring the trail 9 points, plus 1 for the weather, giving a total of 10/10: co-hares Uncle and SamSon dutifully down-downed their beers! Only one Hash Virgin this week - a warm welcome to Ms Quynh! No returnees or sinners (the bus was far too clean to start using the "sinners cups"!), so we moved straight on to a consensus Hashtagging of four eligible Hashers on the back seat. After much "deliberation", Ms Tam became 'Astro Mom' (regular readers will know her son Ugo was tagged 'Astro Boy' last week), daughter Tina became 'Astro Girl', Ms Thuy became 'Aqua', and her daughter Gia Linh became 'KiKi' (don't ask!). All in all, a somewhat "soggy" day - but also an enjoyable adventure; with most hashers anticipating a return in the dry season for a better look at the scenery from the lookout rocks! No firm decision yet on next week's trail - although we're due for at least one local run in our "local/away" rotation system, so let's see what eventuates (also see weekly "run report" emails inviting hares to set 'away' trails within a 45 minutes radius from HRR). A taxi ride to the back of Big Mountain then "up and over", or "M90" (either direction), and/or the "waterfall" trail are all presently under consideration - so please check the NEXT RUN box as we get closer to the weekend and have more idea what kind of weather is on the way... Hashers began arriving at 2 pm and were still arriving as the bus driver started his engine at 2.31! Then we picked up Terminator, Mother Teresa and Superteen at the Seaview Apartments, making a record total of 53 passengers (on a 46-seat bus - which made for some interesting seating arrangements). We dismounted just off the highway at the foot of Nui Dinh, to be told by co-hare Basil that we had a 2 km hike along a dirt track to reach the main start point, where the Chalk Talk would take place. After side-stepping motor bikes for 15 minutes or so we arrived at a nice, shady area for further orders - which included an instruction to pass the swimming pool but don't swim! There were so many tourists and locals already swimming (national holiday weekend) that it would have been v.difficult anyway - although that didn't stop some of the junior Hashers from trying! Then it was "on up" the first of several different flights of stairs - some man-made and some natural - in medium undergrowth, until we finally emerged at what seemed to be a huge outdoor stage under construction, but which we quickly discovered was major renovations at the local (very big) pagoda. Some groups went the wrong way and witnessed monks and nuns practising martial arts, while others chatted with friendly residents who were eager to practise their English. Uncle even had his own "tour guide" for a while! Then Ailing Hash Basil came by with the last group and explained that the trail to the top was slightly different to the route being described by the pagoda residents! We all finally made it up the newly-sealed road to the car park and our bright red eskies, which became the cue for lots of snacking and socialising while some visited the pagoda before returning for a team photo as darkness began to close in. Terminator and Mother Teresa helped everyone celebrate "international oil & gas day" with a bottle of spicy vodka! Ringmaster SamSon called the Circle and introduced the two Hares: himself and Basil. Lady 'D' somehow combined the scores of junior Hashers Messi and Yu Bok to rate the trail 10/10 - a signal for dual Down Downs by the co-hares! Then no fewer than 13 Hash Virgins were welcomed, and half a dozen or so Returnees - including Grandma Rita who played the "looking after the grandchildren" card and earned herself a dousing via the sinners cup! Other sinners were punished for various indiscretions, before Hashtags were given to Ugo ("Astro Boy") and Ms Thuy ("Snow White"). Terminator, Mother Teresa and Superteen were introduced to the Circle as VTH3's "#1 Hash family", having been active members since many years before the "Re-Hash" took place in 2011 to kick-start the modern era of Hashing in Vung Tau (see FAQ page on this website); they were presented with a framed team photo from an earlier celebration of Russia's (WWII) Victory Day. Volunteers were sought to set next week's trail and Uncle volunteered to do a live hare run on one of our favourite hill climbs - Minh Dam Secret Zone then up a jungle trail to the small village inhabited by humble but extremely welcoming monks and nuns, and the massive lookout boulders behind (don't forget your camera!). Also don't forget to check the NEXT RUN box in case of any unforeseen changes during the week! We'll meet at Hon Ru Ri next Sunday, as usual: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! Additional photos: Blondie, Lady 'D' Ringmaster: Uncle. Junior ringmaster: Oggy Chief Drinks Wrangler: Ms Linh Foodies: Mother Teresa, Shaky Junior Hasher of the Day: Huy (4yo) Report: Uncle The sky looked good for Hashing as we gathered at Hon Ru Ri awaiting the Hashmobile to take us to the Seaview Apartments start point. In Basil's temporary absence, we had a smorgasbord of volunteers to make sure everything worked smoothly - which was great! We eventually dismounted what must be the oldest bus in the world(!) outside the Seaview Cafe to find Terminator, Mother Teresa and Superteen waiting for us. A quick chalk talk and we headed for a narrow lane in the far left-hand corner of the estate, then followed the winding lane until turning right onto Luu Chi Hieu, which took us past the turn-off for Ward 10, and the canal, until we turned left on Hem 225 for a 3 km hike north. Just before the hem ended there were some new building works, so we diverted across a footbridge over the canal and continued heading north (also bypassing the notorious "water jump" on the other side!), before crossing back again just past the disused advertising billboard before the Le Quy Don school wall. We followed the bumpy track alongside the school wall and past a few houses before emerging onto Highway 51, which we crossed very carefully in small groups, then left past 3 or 4 roadside trees marked in red ribbon and right onto a brown, sandy track leading past a few houses on the left towards the ocean. We ignored the first right-hand turn and continued towards the "crossroads" before turning right and following up and along a single overhead power line before turning right again onto a narrow stony track which led over some tiles and up to the new road that goes down to the sea - and there were two large buses, but it was easy to recognise our Hashmobile because of the bright red eskies! Time out for snacking on Mother Teresa's delicious open sandwiches, Shaky's peanuts and the ubiquitous bags of chips while socialising around the eskies and/or on the beach (or a swim, as some preferred), then duty Ringmaster Uncle called the Circle and proceeded to rate his own trail. "Points for mitigating circumstances add up to a total 10/10" was the verdict, approved by a show of hands. Hash Virgins introduced themselves: Ben, Huy, Phong, Steven, Anna, Nam, Tuyet* - welcome one and all! (*Some names may be incorrect or wrong order - sorry about that!) Returnees Tiger, Oggy, SID and Sid-knee gave their reasons for absence (work, study, holiday...). Then Lady 'D' charged Tall Tree and Grozny II for losing the trail, and Uncle invited everyone else who missed the red marker tapes in the final stretch to join them in the Circle of Sinners! Finally, VTH3 stalwarts Terminator, Mother Teresa and Superteen were introduced to the many newcomers and applauded for their ongoing involvement over many years (since well before VTH3 was "re-Hashed" in 2011). SamSon has volunteered to set a new trail for next Sunday on Nui Dinh (5 km west of Ba Ria) - but please keep an eye on the NEXT RUN box for confirmation or change (Plan B, if required, will be a live hare trail at Minh Dam to the lookout rocks behind the nuns' houses - a picturesque trail with stunning scenery!).
