BIG MOUNTAIN - NEW FIREBREAK ROAD

Weather: Overcast and cool after rain before start
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 34 Trail: Beer truck and own transport to Ngọc Dung restaurant at 77-79 Trần Phú. Chalk talk by Chippy walk to Đức Mẹ Bãi Dâu (‘Our lady of Bai Dau’ aka ‘Mother Mary and child’) then climb approximately 1200 steps past ‘stations of the cross' to the large cross at the top. Enter the jungle and follow the trail across the ridge of the mountain to Hem 444. Turn right and follow the path for about 1.5km until a new concrete road appears on the right. This is the new ‘firebreak’ road that connects Hem 444 to Vi Ba. Follow the road for about 400m to check out the view. Return back to the start of the road and down the 622 steps to the Chinese-style temple (Hưng Thắng Tự pagoda) and back to Ngọc Dung restaurant. Total distance approximately 4.5km Highlights: Panoramic views of central Vung Tau, including Front Beach and Dau Beach, as well as the Dinh River estuary's wetlands.With an elevation of more than 200m view towards Long Son and Can Gio and the local oil and gas port area. Down Down: Beach level, Ngoc Dung restaurant, 77 Tran Phu. Refreshments: Buffet style chicken nuggets, fried rice and salad prepared by Ngọc Dung, pineapple chunks, water melon. Saigon beer, softies, mineral water. Circle: Chippy applauded for live trail, 3 virgins welcome by Soggy Bottom with the ‘We are Vung Tau Hashers’ song On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy pub, 3A Lê Ngọc Hân. Trail: Bus left Mr Cs 1:30pm and arrived Thi Vai Mountain approximately 1.5hrs later.
We disembarked the bus and after a short briefing walked down a sealed road for a few hundred metres before turning left and heading up a jungle path which was both overgrown with growth and bamboo but was also a solid workout. After climbing for about 2km reached the top of the mountain and were rewarded with spectacular views of the area all the way back to Vung Tau and a well earned water/photograph break. After resting for about 15mins or so we started our descent down through a small temple before a quite gruelling set of 1200 steps which gave your legs a thorough workout. Upon reaching the bottom we passed through another beautiful temple called Linh Son Thien Buu Tu before finishing for our down down and more refreshments. Down Down: Coffee shop at the bottom of Linh Son Thien Buu Tu Refreshments: Bahn mi, water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: As it was raining the circle was conducted on the bus by Anagram which was quite interesting On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 23 Trail: Dismounted at the lake at the top of Núi Dinh road. Took the jungle path behind the shack opposite Quán cô Hường. Turn left on to sealed road and follow for ~2.5km until arriving at Chùa Hang Mai. Follow the steps down and turn right to the large veranda looking out to views of Núi Tóc Tiên and Núi Thị Vải opposite a war memorial. Continue to an additional temple with an ornate dragon style bridge. Turn back to the bottom of steps and then follow red ribbons down a dirt path until coming to the Tổ Đình Linh Sơn temple and then carefully descend steep concrete path to finish at the Chùa Niết Bàn Phật Điện in under cover platform. Total distance ~6.5km. Highlights: Fantastic views from the Chùa Hang Mai and ornate dragon bridge Down Down: Chùa Niết Bàn Phật Điện Refreshments: Pork noodles. Ms. Kim’s spring rolls and coffee sponge cake, water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Since it was getting dark after a longer trail than normal and it was about to start to rain there was no circle this week On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Total Hashers: 37 Trail: Passed Ba Ria on highway 51 and turned right past the ‘Historic relics Dinh mountain’ sign after ~5 km. Dismounted at end of long parallel road aka ‘temple boulevard’ near mountain base. Climb 466 stone steps with red/yellow handrails through Tô Đình Lính Sơn aka ‘monkey temple’ and turn right onto jungle trail after another 60 stone steps. Wait for Hares and/or right turn at crossroads for viewpoint and photo ops at lookout rocks, then back to crossroads and follow red marker ribbons and occasional printed signs across the mountain on mix of dirt and corrugated concrete tracks past several smaller temples and hillside dwellings to finally emerge onto Nui Dinh main sealed access road. Then several hundred metres downhill and across road bridge to row of coffee shops marking Suối tiên rest area (Fairy stream). Help to unload photo banner, refreshments, etc and carry down 60+ steps, across footbridge and onto rocks for Down Down. Total distance ~3.5km. Highlights: Awesome views from the panoramic view point. Several Hashers enjoyed swimming in the Fairy stream cascading over rocks at Down Down Down Down: Fairy stream rocks (Suối Tiên). Refreshments: Pate so. Lemon sponge cake, water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 9/10 “Very good”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. 7 Virgins this week including husband and wife Tom and Thuy, Nate from Florida and his Vietnamese girlfriend, Anastasia from Russia, An Phạm and Phương Uyên from Vietnam. We also welcomed back two returnees Alice a long time Hasher from 8 years ago who returned from Australia for a holiday and Rayza who had been in Australia On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
