NÚI DINH - HELICOPTER TRAIL
Hares: Secs, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers:
Secs (group photo), Chippy

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
David

Choirmaster:
Uncle
Report: Uncle
Weather: Sunshine, scattered cloud, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Chom Chom @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 25
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile at roadside camping ground opposite sugar cane seller’s hammock rest area at entry to monastery access road approx. midway between bridge and ‘old’ lake. Larger than usual Hash Lite group continued towards old lake and main group walked ~500 metres along sealed monastery access road for Chalk Talk by Secs, then into the jungle.
We followed Hares and marker tapes along rock-strewn, duff-covered ascent (long climb and many large boulders near the top: so frequent rests for most, but not overly difficult). Finally gathered on lookout rocks with marked compass bearings from wartime helipad activity. Many photos and panoramic views then steep, rock-strewn descent through often dense bamboo canopy and several shallow stream beds to street level, past monastery then followed sealed access road back to start point (A-A). Total distance ~4km.

Highlights: Ideal Hashing weather. Young entrepreneur selling welcome drinks at helipad rock. Circle format tweaked to include Ringmaster supported by Choirmaster and Baptismal sprinkles.
Down Down: Camping grounds between bridge and lake opposite monastery access road.
Refreshments: ‘Bun thit nen nuong’ (bbq pork, vermicelli, peanuts, fish sauce). Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, and tasty coffee cake courtesy Ms Kim. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 10,10/10. “Difficult at times, but good”, Hares Secs and Chippy applauded. Hash Virgins Mr Ha and Ms Mai (HCMC), and Visitors Junior Hasher Playboy Nomad and mum Top Muffin (Nha Trang Hash) introduced and welcomed.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Hashmobile seats allocated in order of registration but CAN’T BE GUARANTEED if booked less than 24 hours before run start. Also PLEASE CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION if unable to attend, so mismanagement can adjust/re-allocate seating and/or refreshments.

Hares: Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Secs (group photo), Chippy
Asset Wranglers: Chom Chom, Chook
Ringmaster: Uncle
Baptisms: Bishop

Report: Uncle
Weather: Broken cloud, fresh breezes on mountain, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 35
Trail: Boarded Hashmobile at new meeting place Mr C’s Speakeasy (3b Le Ngoc Han). Collected out of town Hashers at Seaview and Lan Rung resort. Bypassed main entrance gate to Minh Dam Base and dismounted several hundred metres further along sealed road. Chalk talk by Secs (edited): “Follow red markers along sand/dirt track into jungle. Relatively short trail (~2.5 km), but steep in parts with a mix of dirt, dead leaves and stone steps. Pass the small house two-thirds of the way to top, then continue over boulders to flagpoles on split lookout rocks. Panoramic views and photo opportunities. Descend on hundreds of stone steps past small museum and Hòn Đá Chẻ regulations notice to Minh Dam Base parking area for Down Down.”
Highlights: Helpful rope handrails on steepest parts of trail. Cool breezes at lookout rocks. Historic war relics museum near trail end (closed today). Aggressive monkeys absent from Down Down area – only placid dogs today.
Lowlights: Flags missing from flagpoles seemingly due recent stormy weather (two flags seen lying on the mountainside below split lookout rocks).
Special interest: Newly imposed fee in Minh Dam Base parking area: 30k vnd.
Down Down: Minh Dam Base parking area.
Circle: Trail rated highly @ 300, 267/10(!). Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Hash Virgins Misses Thơm, Hoài Anh and Quang Anh introduced and ‘baptised’ by Bishop. 6 Returnees including junior Hasher Leo and parents welcomed back.

Report: Uncle
Weather: Continuous light rain
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 29
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile outside former swimming pool café (Bồng Lai Quán), but now shut down. Chalk talk by Secs. Walked approx. 1 km up sealed Nui Dinh road and turned left onto Di Da Son pagoda access track about 50 metres before steps down to Fairy Stream. Eventually reached pagoda grounds and viewed many religious artefacts before continuing on fairly dense jungle trail, mostly downhill over dead leaves and mud-covered rocks (eloquently described by one relatively new Hasher with a smile: “…challenging but great fun!”). Finally reached ground level and Bồng Lai Quán 2 with its picturesque lake and restaurant (when not raining!), now operated by former swimming pool café management. Total distance ~4km.
Highlights: Picturesque artefacts at Di Da Son pagoda. New Down Down venue Bong Lai Quan 2.

AN NHẤT RICE FIELDS
Hares: Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Chom Chom (group photo), Chippy
Asset Wrangler: Chom Chom
Ringmaster: David

Report: Uncle
Weather: Overcast, cool breezes. Scattered showers after trail.
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3A Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 – now our official new weekly venue.
Total Hashers: 39
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile on highway 55 in An Nhất, Long Điền, at famous local restaurant Bánh Hỏi An Nhứt. Chalk Talk by Secs then ~500 metres through residential area into rice fields and followed red marker tapes on sealed roads out, around and back to the start point on highway 55. Total distance ~7km.
Highlights:
  • Fashionable harriettes wearing áo bà ba (short shirts popular in southwestern VN countryside, worn with long silk trousers) and decorative nón lá (conical hats). National flag icons were prominent to acknowledge Independence Day, 2 Sept.
  • Feasting on local delicacy bánh hỏi after strolling through the rice fields exchanging greetings with friendly locals, taking photos, admiring colourful flowers and fruits, watching kite flying and flocks of ducks paddling and waddling by. It was an interesting change to our usual mountainous jungle trails!
  • Crowds at the night food markets (Ẩm thực quê) as we left the area, providing another strong reminder of our culturally different day in the laid-back ambience of VN’s countryside!
Special interest 1: Bánh hỏi is rice vermicelli woven into intricate layers and usually served with chopped scallions and garlic chives sauteed in oil, accompanied by sliced cucumber, carrots, diced meat ‘fingers’ and leafy greens.
Special interest 2: An Nhất is listed in official census documents by its original name: An Nhứt. It’s a rural commune and village in Long Điền district, BR-VT (pending confirmation of boundary restructures effective 1 July).
Down Down: Bánh Hỏi An Nhứt restaurant – a popular eatery established more than 30 years ago, hence still using original commune spelling An Nhứt i/o today’s An Nhất.
Refreshments: Bánh hỏi. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail awarded full marks by acclaim (especially the Seaview ladies who joined for today’s flat trail). Hares Secs, Bull Ant and Chippy applauded. Hash Virgins Trung, Thuy, Tony, Ngan (2-1/2yo), Steve, Mung, Hoa and Visitor Brendan introduced and welcomed (baptismal sprinkles by Bishop). Returnees John and Lady Di welcomed back. Congratulations to David for successful completion of his Ringmaster apprenticeship!
Official new venue: Effective run 1180, our asset storage and new weekly meeting venue is Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3A Le Ngoc Han. Many thanks to new hosts Randy and Ms Tam.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer when paying run fees.
