LONG HAI MOUNTAINS-HONG DUNG PEAK
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant (live trail)
Hash Flashers:
Secs (group photo), Chippy

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
David

Report: Uncle
Weather: Overcast, warm, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 21
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile outside al fresco café at foot of Destiny Mountain (part of Long Hai Mountains chain). Chalk talk by Secs reminded all that today’s trail was “live” so anyone getting lost should go back to the nearest red ribbon and wait for one of the live hares to show the way. Then it was “On on” to the first (conveniently handrailed) section of ~500 stone steps onto the mountain.
Turned left after the steps ended near a small homestead and continued following the ribbons and live hares along a dense leaf-littered, mud and rock strewn trail over two streams to lookout rocks at the highly decorative Non Tiên pagoda on Hong Dung peak.
We explored the pagoda’s many shrines and nearby caves, enjoyed panoramic views and took many photos on and from the lookout rocks, then followed an often slippery descent over hundreds of moss-covered rocks to go ‘full circle’ back to the eco resort at ground level. Total distance ~5km.

Highlights: Panoramic views and intricate shrines at Non Tiên pagoda lookout rocks on Hon Dung peak.
Down Down: Ngoc Xuong eco-tourism resort, group 6/70, Hai Binh hamlet, Long Hai (near mountain end of 3 February Street).
Refreshments: BBQ pork banh mi, veg, dip; pizza buns, wholemeal bread. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 10, 10/10. “Great”, “Very interesting”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Returnees Ray (was sick in Australia, ‘but glad to be back’), and Chris (England, 7 months) welcomed back. Ms Kim thanked for more delicious buns and bread; replied that it was ‘her pleasure’! Soggy Bottom thanked Stu and Chook for wrangling eskies and sundry Hash assets. Ringmaster David reminded the Circle that using “On on” helps everyone stay on correct trail.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Hashmobile seats allocated in order of registration but CAN’T BE GUARANTEED if booked less than 24 hours before run start. Also PLEASE CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION if unable to attend, so mismanagement can adjust/re-allocate seating and/or refreshments.

MONKEY PAGODA - MINH ĐẠM BASE
Hares: Secs, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers:
Chom Chom (group photo), Chippy

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
Chom Chom

Report:
Uncle

Weather: High cloud, hot. No rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Chom Chom @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 22
Trail:  Dismounted 2 km before Minh Dam Base at Thien Vien Truc Lam Chan Nguyen pagoda, aka ‘Monkey Pagoda’ since hordes of local monkeys realized it’s a rich source of food from tourists. But the only monkeys sighted today were at the end of the trail, not the beginning (see ‘Lowlights’ below).
Chalk talk by Secs then around temple for a steep climb over well-defined rock steps and scattered rocks, passing a temple and small shacks then more hillside dwellings and shrines at the "double rocks" summit.
Squeezed between the huge double rocks and continued across the ridge over many smaller rocks and leaf litter, then steep downhill jungle trail over mud, rocks, rock steps with occasional hand rails and corrugated concrete past Bach Van Dinh shrine to Minh Dam Base parking area. Total distance ~3 km.

Highlights: Temple and hillside dwellings at top of climb scattered with shrines, altars and many picturesque religious artefacts and relics. Panoramic views of resort developments along the coastline. Welcome sea breeze over lookout rocks. Xa Xiu buns and Banh Kep biscuits courtesy Ms Kim to acknowledge Vietnam Women’s Day tomorrow.
Lowlights: Aggressive monkeys in Down Down area (some even chasing tourists’ dogs away from “their” territory).
Down Down: Minh Dam Base parking area.
Refreshments: BBQ pork, vermicelli, green veg, Xa Xiu buns. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, Banh Kep biscuits. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 10, 10, 10/10 “Superb”, “Challenging”. Hares Secs and Chippy applauded. Returnee Ragnor Shaggypants welcomed back (HCMC, cycling). Hash names bestowed on Alan: ‘Boomerang’, Diem: ‘Candy’, Kelvin:‘Kevin’, Phuoc: ‘Happy’. Ms Kim was thanked once again for her generous donations of superbly cooked food!

BIG MOUNTAIN
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Chook, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Secs (group photo), Chippy
Asset Wrangler: Chook
Ringmaster: David

Report: Secs
Weather: Hot and sunny with torrential rain after the trail.
Hash Cash:
1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.

Total Hashers:
19

Trail:
Own transport / taxi to Ngọc Dung Restaurant. Secs gave the chalk talk explaining that the trail that had been originally planned had to be altered due to new construction work at Vo Van Kiet school where we would normally start to ascend the mountain. Instead we needed to walk 1.5km along Trần Phú Street until we came to a narrow alley, follow it for ~100m and then we would have to climb a short but steep incline. Luckily Chook had acquired a rope that would help us pull ourselves up past spikey trees and over loose dirt and rocks. At the end of the rope we were back on the familiar trail that emerged opposite the French Cannons on Hem 444. Followed the road until red marker indicated the right turn that would take us to the top of the 635 steps that lead down to Hưng Thắng Tự temple at 112 Trần Phú. From the temple it was a short walk back to Ngọc Dung Restaurant

Highlights:
Great views of Vung Tau from Hem 444

Lowlights:
Torrential rain as we were preparing to head back home or to Mr. C’s

Down Down:
Ngọc Dung restaurant, 77-79 Tran Phu Street

Refreshments:
Pork kebabs, water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.

Circle:
Trail rated 10/10. Hares Chippy, Secs, Chook and Bull Ant  applauded. Virgins Mark from Australia and Nguyễn and Mai from Vietnam were welcomed, Returnees Alan and Phoung welcomed back after extended absences.

On on on:
Mr C’s Speakeasy.
