SMALL MOUNTAIN - LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom
Ringmaster: Chom Chom
Report: Uncle

Weather: Overcast, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (on Lam Son side of the building near parking area and new storage shed).
Total Hashers: 26
Trail: Own transport, beer truck and eco cart/walk from Ha Long Highlands Coffee to 18 Hai Dang (Small Mountain). Chalk talk by Secs. Backtrack down to hairpin bend behind Lucy’s Tavern then go left and follow Hai Dang past several coffee shops and “on on” towards Army camp until road blocked by fence and barrier. Turn left into jungle and follow red tape to concrete wall/structure then over (or around!) and continue up, up, up through dense bamboo and lots of dry prickly stuff(!) to Lighthouse. Enjoy breeze and views over Vung Tau city and East Sea then follow Hai Dang down other side (via one short-cut) to Down Down venue above jewellery shop at 18 Hai Dang. Total distance ~4.5km.
Highlights: Dense dry bamboo cover on the mountain forcing most Hashers to duck low to avoid being snagged (hence Circle comment, “Revenge of the little people”). Welcome breeze and panoramic views at the Lighthouse.
Special interest: Portrait artist at the Lighthouse (“10 mins”). Circle announcement of special evening function at Nang Vung Tau, 29 December: more details to follow but date confirmed!
Down Down: Above jewellery store ‘Tam Quan’, 18 Hai Dang, Small Mountain (Lighthouse hill).Refreshments: Doner kebab (“triangle banh mi”), water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 27,9,10=15/10(!). “Superb!” “Revenge of the little people!” “Great!”. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant applauded. No Hash Virgins. 5 Returnees Nam (“Working”), Chief Stoker and Jolly (“Planting herbs and tomatoes in Europe”(!), Ragnar Shaggypants (“With KL Hash in Phuket”), Sweet (“Busy/lazy”) welcomed back. Thanks to Circle helper David.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run.
PLEASE REMEMBER: We can all help to keep run fees as low as possible by cancelling registration if suddenly unable to attend (mismanagement can then adjust transport and/or food and drinks if necessary).

Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant

Report: Uncle
Weather: Blue skies, hot, humid but no sign of rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (on Lam Son side of the building near parking area and new storage shed).
Total Hashers: 29
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile at junction with 30 April ring road. Chalk Talk by Secs then followed red tapes through residential area to base of Long Son mountain.
Up, up, up steep and mostly concreted stone steps to temporary re-grouping area at top. Followed red tapes around the peak past several shrines and altars then down, down, down often steep jungle trail mix of rocks, mud and dense foliage.
Finally back to ground zero and followed access track of broken stones for several hundred metres to sealed side-road and past several properties to Down Down venue at junction with 30 April ring road. Total distance ~3 km.
Highlights: Good weather. Extended socializing at Down Down. ‘Other business’ mention of important announcement next week (Christmas, perhaps?).

LONG HAI MOUNTAINS
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant (live trail)
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom
Baptism sprinkles: Bishop
Ringmaster: Chom Chom
Report: Uncle
Weather: Humid, overcast.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (on Lam Son side of the building near parking area and new storage shed).
Total Hashers: 47
Trail: Dismounted Hashmobile at Ngoc Xuong eco resort, Long Hai. Chalk talk Secs (EN), Chippy (VN). Long walk through the village (“left turn, right turn, left turn, on-on!”) then onto mountain via several hundred stone steps (one section with convenient hand rails). Cross two streams (or same stream twice?) on jungle trail to lookout rocks at small pagoda on first peak. Then complete “full circle” with steep, often slippery moss-covered descent over rock-strewn trail to eco resort. Total distance ~5km.
Highlights: Panoramic views and welcome breeze at lookout rocks behind small pagoda on Hon Dung peak. Various other religious shrines and artefacts scattered around the mountainside.
Witnessing the incredible diversity of mountain life, with a teenager playing video games on his iPad while family elders struggled past carrying heavy rolls of corrugated tin sheets for house extensions!
Also watching in awe as tiny, 3yo junior Harriette ‘Carrot’ showed amazing grit to clamber over rocks and boulders without a word of complaint!
Local interest: Barking dogs everywhere; most houses seem to have at least 3 or 4!
Down Down: The lawn and lake at Ngoc Xuong eco-tourism resort, group 6/70, Hai Binh hamlet, Long Hai.
Refreshments: Bbq pork noodles, veg, peanuts, dipping sauce. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 9,10,9=28/30. “Very good”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. 4 Hash Virgins welcomed and baptismally sprinkled(!). Returnees James (working in Aus 6 months) and Mike (Marine Biologist offshore 1 year) welcomed back.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run.

HOÀ BÌNH WATERFALL
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Secs
Baptism sprinkles: Bishop
Ringmaster: Uncle
Report: Uncle
Weather: Sunny, then overcast. Some thunder but only a few seconds of light rain at start of trail.
Hash Cash: Early start for longer distance to travel - 11 am run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (on Lam Son side of the building near parking area and new storage shed).
Total Hashers: 43
Trail: Hashmobile Driver Suu finally managed to open the loading bay without a key, so we departed a bit later than planned but with all the bodies and goodies packed nice and tight!
We dismounted approx. 90 mins later at the Ray River Irrigation Project dam via Ba Ria and Xuyen Moc, approx 4.5 km (and a lot of deep, fast-flowing water) from our Down Down destination: Thác chính Hoà Bình (Hoa Binh main waterfall).
Chalk talk by Secs, then over the locked gate (4yo Junior Hasher ‘Carrot’ happily squeezed through it!) and mid-way across the overpass we descended 92 steps, helped each other down a makeshift ladder (two tree branches and some string), then followed red tapes mostly alongside the Ray River, negotiating a series of obstacles including lower-leg-shredding undergrowth, lots of mud, several barbed wire fences, many slippery rocks and strong currents in a succession of river crossings to the Hoa Binh eco park main waterfall and picnic/camping grounds.
Highlights: The last three (and most demanding) river crossings: the water flows had been much lower and slower when the Hares set the trail two days earlier, so many Hashers had unexpected soakings before finally managing to survive (nay, “triumph”!) by grabbing offered sticks and rope (thanks Hares!), ‘monkey crawling’ along tree branches, jumping over channels (occasionally falling short!), wading waist-deep and even piggy-backing (seniors as well as juniors!): “On On” often became “Just wait” as we helped each other across the fast-flowing waters and muddy, rock-strewn river bed.
Chicken salad ‘country style’ at the down down (head, tail, legs, feet, etc etc – nothing wasted!).
Swimming in the eco park waterfalls: Junior Hashers and several ‘not so junior’ really enjoyed it (some had practised along the trail already!).
Special interest:  The Ray River (Sông Ray) starts at Xuan Loc mountain in Dong Nai province, runs through BR-VT’s Dat Do, Long Dien and Xuyen Moc districts and flows into the ocean through Loc An estuary. It plays an important role in supplying water for domestic use and agricultural production of BR-VT province, managed by the Ray River Irrigation Project.

Down Down: Thác chính Hoà Bình (Hoa Binh main waterfall).

Refreshments: Chicken & mushroom congee/rice soup, chicken salad ‘country style’. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.

Circle: Everyone congratulated for their willingness to help others on an unusually challenging trail. “Hashing is not a competition, it’s all about helping each other enjoy the trail!”
Trail rated 10/10: “Challenging, interesting, different”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Hash Virgins Tom (Canada), Fintan (London) and ‘Mum plus two’ (HCMC) introduced, welcomed and baptismally sprinkled. Returnee Bootlicker welcomed back and Visitor wife Classy Bag (Copenhagen H3) introduced.
