BIG MOUNTAIN - WATERFALL / M90
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers:
Chom Chom (group photo), Kelvin and various contributors

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
David
Report: Uncle
Weather: High UV, humid, cloudy, no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Chom Chom @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 24
Trail: Chalk talk at Mr C’s by Secs (edited): “Walk down Le Ngoc Han, turn right onto Tran Phu then follow red marker tapes and right again at Hem 12 (Princess Spa). Uphill through affluent neighbourhood then 116 narrow concrete steps to lesser affluent area leading into Chùa Bồ Đề pagoda (see ‘Special interest’ below). Left on Vi Ba and up several hundred metres to follow marker tapes into jungle waterfall trail not far beyond right-hand (on ascent) hairpin. Follow tapes around summit and below Ho May Park cable car tramway to 4-way plateau, then straight across to M90 trail and down to Vi Ba. Turn right for 3-400 metres then sharp left down mossy slope and slippery concrete steps to Le Ngoc Han Hem 105. Turn right for several hundred metres to complete A-A trail at Mr C’s Speakeasy. Total distance ~5km”.
Highlights: Cool breezes on the mountain. Serene bay views from Vi Ba and the Bo De pagoda. Ms Kim’s bananas and home-made coffee sponge cake ‘snacks’ at Down Down while executive chef Randy C. prepared a superb range of delicious wood-fired pizzas for the hungry horde.
Lowlights: Sad news from recent Returnee Azura that her beloved pooch “Noob” died recently from a uterine infection. Noob was a VTH3 regular who would drag the leash out every Sunday in anticipation of another Hash outing! RIP Noob…
Special interest: Chùa Bồ Đề (Phường 1, Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu)
Down Down: Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Le Ngoc Han, Ward 1 (Front beach).
Refreshments: Mr C’s pizzas. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, bananas, coffee sponge cake. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Hashers scattered around customer tables so no ‘circle’ as such, but full marks for the trail. Thanks to Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant for marking the course. Hash Virgin Gregg (USA - “Two G’s please”!) and Visitor Guantanamo Gay (ex-US Navy MP: also 2 G’s, pronounced ‘GG’!) welcomed. Returnees HBO, Hoang Anh welcomed back.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Hashmobile seats allocated in order of registration but CAN’T BE GUARANTEED if booked less than 24 hours before run start. Also PLEASE CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION if unable to attend, so mismanagement can adjust/re-allocate seating and/or refreshments.

LONG SON ISLAND
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers:
Secs (group photo), Chippy

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
Uncle

Baptismal sprinkles:
Bishop

Report: Uncle
Weather: Light rain then stopped. Cooler air on mountain and sea breezes in Down Down yard.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 33
Trail: Over access bridges and left onto Long Son island to follow 28 April Street ~2 km to Quan 999 (small restaurant/eatery on RH side). Dismounted in parking area, Chalk Talk by Secs. Walked ~400 metres along 28 April Street then right at red marker tape after school. Followed track through village to lower mountain. Crossed the quarry, climbed exit boulders then continued steep climb to summit. Across level area then steeply down over many small rocks. Onto narrow concrete track past cemetery and several houses to complete ‘loop’ to 28 April Street, then turned right and continued ~200 metres to Quan 999. Total distance ~3.5-4km.
Highlights: Happy youngsters in village practising English: “Hi, what’s your name?”. Hashers helping each other on vertical climb out of quarry. Welcome shade and cooling breeze on hillside beyond quarry. Greetings from friendly karaoke group near end of trail. Birthday cake and greetings for Bishop and Chief Stoker. Delicious buns and cakes courtesy Ms Kim.
Lowlights: Red marker tapes disappeared from mountain summit (again!) causing some confusion but clarified by Hares.
Down Down: Quán 999, Thôn 4, Xã Long Sơn (small restaurant/eatery #999, Village 4, Long Son commune).
Refreshments: Quan 999 ‘special’ grilled chicken, green coconut sticky rice, cucumber, leafy veg, dips. Water melon, pineapple chunks, sweet buns, apple tart slices. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated full marks, “excellent”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Hash virgins Gabriel, Hiep, Thuan welcomed then ‘baptised’ by Bishop. Returnees Chief Stoker and Jolly welcomed back (8 months in Europe). Sinner Bull Ant punished(!) with ‘down down’ for finding false trail when marker tapes missing.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration.

NÚI DINH – SUỐI TIÊN
Hares: Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers:
Chom Chom (group photo), Chippy

Asset Wrangler:
Chook

Ringmaster:
David
Report: Uncle
Weather: Hot, but mostly shady trail; no rain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 30
Trail: Passed Ba Ria on highway 51 and turned right past the ‘Historic relics Dinh mountain’ sign after ~5 km. Dismounted at end of long parallel road aka ‘temple boulevard’ near mountain base. Chalk talk by Secs included reminder that it’s a live trail so wait for the Hares if you’re not sure of the way (unlike last time when 5 Hashers wrongly followed one of the many unmarked side trails on Dinh mountain).
Climb 466 stone steps with red/yellow handrails through Tô Đình Lính Sơn aka ‘monkey temple’ and turn right onto jungle trail after another 60 stone steps.
Wait for Hares and/or right turn at crossroads for viewpoint and photo ops at lookout rocks, then back to crossroads and follow live hares, red marker ribbons and occasional printed signs across the mountain on mix of dirt and corrugated concrete tracks past several smaller temples and hillside dwellings to finally emerge onto Nui Dinh main sealed access road.
Then several hundred metres downhill and across road bridge to row of coffee shops marking Suối tiên rest area (Fairy stream). Help to unload photo banner, refreshments, etc and carry down 60+ steps, across footbridge and onto rocks for Down Down. Total distance ~3.5km.
Highlights: ‘Back to nature’ with several hillside dwellings having not only the usual dogs but also a plentiful supply of wild cats and hens.
Several junior and not so junior Hashers enjoyed the fast-flowing Fairy stream cascading over rocks at Down Down.
Hot dogs, lemon sponge cakes courtesy Ms Kim – yum yum!
Former Ringmaster-in-training ‘David’ now fully fledged Ringmaster doing an excellent job by adding his individual flair to Circle business – On On!
Special interest: One nameless Hash stalwart proved that fully loaded eskies can skate downhill under their own power and still only sustain minimal damage! He also proved orange juice is a good substitute for water in the Hash Circle and an esky load of unopened beer cans will stay afloat when dropped several metres into fast-flowing streams… Now THAT’S a busy day!
Down Down: Fairy stream rocks (Suối Tiên).
Refreshments: Ham and veg banh mi, hot dogs. Lemon sponge cake, water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 9/10 “Very good”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Hash Virgin Nattawat (Thailand, working in Vung Tau) welcomed. Returnees Andrew (‘Rear Admiral’); ‘mother, daughter & son’ family Hoa, Maya & Minh; Sausage head (Pattaya Hash); Adzura (HCMC) and Hien (VT but usually works Sundays) welcomed back.

Hares: Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy (live trail)
Hash Flashers:

Ringmaster:
Chom Chom
Report: Uncle
Weather: Overcast, humid. Light rain on return trip.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Mr C’s Speakeasy, 3b Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 26
Trail: This was effectively trail 1173 in reverse direction, so dismounted Hashmobile at end of main sealed mountain road near signpost for Hang Mai pagoda. Chalk Talk by Secs reminded everyone to wait for live hares if lost or unsure of direction. Walked up and around big lake then crossed fast-flowing stream into jungle. Followed mostly muddy trail with small streams and pools until final aggressive stream for ‘full circle’ back to main road and Down Down opposite nuoc mia stalls. Total distance ~4-5km.”
Highlights:
  • Hashers helping each other across the deeper streams and pools.
  • 4 uni students giving welcome help for Hashers to navigate submerged rocks across the last (and deepest) fast-flowing stream.
  • Sticky rice and chicken in banana leaf wrap and biscuits courtesy Ms Kim; apple tart slices courtesy Bishop.
Down Down: East-side off-road camping area opposite nuoc mia stalls near top of main Nui Dinh sealed road.
Refreshments: Pork banh mi, veg, dip; sticky rice and chicken in banana leaf wrap. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks, apple tart, biscuits. Saigon Bia, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 8.5, 10, 9.5/10 “Very scenic”, “Very good”, “Bit wet in parts”(!). Live hares Secs, Bull Ant, Chippy applauded. Returnee Rory ‘Hot Lips’ (6 months working on house) and Visitors Big Lungs and Knob Marley (Pattaya Hash) welcomed. Ms Kim and Bishop thanked for their generous and tasty food contributions.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy.
Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. If anyone would like to help set trails, please volunteer at registration.
