HOÀ BÌNH WATERFALL
Hares: Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Secs Baptism sprinkles: Bishop Ringmaster: Uncle Report: Uncle
Weather: Sunny, then overcast. Some thunder but only a few seconds of light rain at start of trail.
Hash Cash: Early start for longer distance to travel - 11 am run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (on Lam Son side of the building near parking area and new storage shed). Total Hashers: 43 Trail: Hashmobile Driver Suu finally managed to open the loading bay without a key, so we departed a bit later than planned but with all the bodies and goodies packed nice and tight! We dismounted approx. 90 mins later at the Ray River Irrigation Project dam via Ba Ria and Xuyen Moc, approx 4.5 km (and a lot of deep, fast-flowing water) from our Down Down destination: Thác chính Hoà Bình (Hoa Binh main waterfall). Chalk talk by Secs, then over the locked gate (4yo Junior Hasher ‘Carrot’ happily squeezed through it!) and mid-way across the overpass we descended 92 steps, helped each other down a makeshift ladder (two tree branches and some string), then followed red tapes mostly alongside the Ray River, negotiating a series of obstacles including lower-leg-shredding undergrowth, lots of mud, several barbed wire fences, many slippery rocks and strong currents in a succession of river crossings to the Hoa Binh eco park main waterfall and picnic/camping grounds. Highlights: The last three (and most demanding) river crossings: the water flows had been much lower and slower when the Hares set the trail two days earlier, so many Hashers had unexpected soakings before finally managing to survive (nay, “triumph”!) by grabbing offered sticks and rope (thanks Hares!), ‘monkey crawling’ along tree branches, jumping over channels (occasionally falling short!), wading waist-deep and even piggy-backing (seniors as well as juniors!): “On On” often became “Just wait” as we helped each other across the fast-flowing waters and muddy, rock-strewn river bed. Chicken salad ‘country style’ at the down down (head, tail, legs, feet, etc etc – nothing wasted!). Swimming in the eco park waterfalls: Junior Hashers and several ‘not so junior’ really enjoyed it (some had practised along the trail already!). Special interest: The Ray River (Sông Ray) starts at Xuan Loc mountain in Dong Nai province, runs through BR-VT’s Dat Do, Long Dien and Xuyen Moc districts and flows into the ocean through Loc An estuary. It plays an important role in supplying water for domestic use and agricultural production of BR-VT province, managed by the Ray River Irrigation Project. Down Down: Thác chính Hoà Bình (Hoa Binh main waterfall). Refreshments: Chicken & mushroom congee/rice soup, chicken salad ‘country style’. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water. Circle: Everyone congratulated for their willingness to help others on an unusually challenging trail. “Hashing is not a competition, it’s all about helping each other enjoy the trail!” Trail rated 10/10: “Challenging, interesting, different”. Hares Secs, Chippy, Bull Ant applauded. Hash Virgins Tom (Canada), Fintan (London) and ‘Mum plus two’ (HCMC) introduced, welcomed and baptismally sprinkled. Returnee Bootlicker welcomed back and Visitor wife Classy Bag (Copenhagen H3) introduced. On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy. Next week: Watch this space, Zalo, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run. PLEASE REMEMBER: We can all help to keep run fees as low as possible by cancelling registration if suddenly unable to attend (mismanagement can then adjust transport and/or food and drinks if necessary). “On On”
