BIG MOUNTAIN - HAPPY TRAIL / JESUS CROSS

Weather: Hot! Occasional cool breeze on mountain.
Hash Cash: 1pm run fees Bull Ant, Secs @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1 (Lam Sơn Quán restaurant side).
Total Hashers: 22
Trail: Carry truck/own transport to Ngoc Dung restaurant, 79 Tran Phu. Offloaded food and drinks then walked several hundred metres to Happy Trail start at Vo Van Kiet school. Chalk Talk by Secs. Followed red marker tapes uphill and veered off Happy Trail to old French bunkers and gun emplacements then continued uphill via challenging rock climb to top of peak (via one more old French bunker). Across peak and down jungle trail (hot, dry slippery rocks, dirt and dead leaves) to eventually reach the large ‘cross of Jesus’ just below summit of third mountain peak behind the ‘Church of Bai Dau’ and 32m statue of Đức Mẹ Bãi Dâu (‘Our lady of Bai Dau’ aka ‘Mother Mary and child’). Down several hundred rock steps with convenient handrails, past ‘stations of the cross’ to church gardens. Across Tran Phu then down Ngoc Dung restaurant steps to beach level for Down Down. Total distance ~3 km (but seemed much longer!).
Highlights: Splendid views of the bay if not too tired to enjoy due hot weather and challenging trail! Relaxing beachfront Down Down.
Special interest: A recently uncovered ‘small hole in the ground’ among the old French bunkers – is it a cave entrance, or…? Watch this space on future run reports!
Down Down: Beach level, Ngoc Dung restaurant, 79 Tran Phu.
Refreshments: BBQ pork banh mi. Water melon slices, pineapple chunks. Bia Saigon, Revive, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Trail rated 10, 10/10. “So tired”. “Hot”. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant applauded. Returnee ‘Alan no name’ welcomed back (working in Australia). No Hash Virgins, Visitors or Sinners. Thanks to Circle Helper David.
Circle announcement: Today’s postponed all day trail to Núi Chứa Chan in Đồng Nai province rescheduled for 8 am start on Sunday, 13 April. Details being circulated via email distribution list, Zalo, facebook, etc. PLEASE BOOK EARLY!
