A SUMMARY OF MISMANAGEMENT - the "backbone" of any Hash kennel
No self-respecting Hasher wants to be part of (or run by) a "committee"; so those stalwarts inclined to spend the most time and energy making sure "everything will be OK on the day", are instead known as "Mismanagement" - also at least partly because it's the most accurate description of how things actually happen!
Below is a brief rundown, in no particular order, of the main tasks required to keep things moving along (in VTH3, at least) from week to week - with "Mismanagement" usually being ably assisted by voluntary or co-opted helpers from time to time as required.
There is far more detail available for each of these tasks, and in this selection of drop-down menus (under "Hashing with VTH3") we've highlighted (segregated?) the two most important roles in any Hash: Hares and Hounds(for that is, after all, the exercise model upon which the entire worldwide Hash movement was originally founded). For more detail about the other tasks that need to be done each week, please go to "To be anything else".
It's also worth noting here that while The Circle can and often does make decisions "on the day for the day", only a majority (or occasionally unanimous) vote by Mismanagement can make and/or change the rules by which VTH3 operates - because each Circle is a once-off for that day only, whereas Mismanagement is elected by the members to provide ongoing consistency and continuity in not only the rules but interpretation of the rules. A solid Mismanagement bloc is also a safeguard against takeover attempts by rogue former Hashers, "Johnny come latelies" - or anyone else who may not have the welfare of VTH3 uppermost in their heart!
Grand Master: generally work with and/or direct and advise Mismanagement. Interact with outside agencies and interested parties where necessary, usually in conjunction with On Sec and/or Mismanagement. Be the "public face" of VTH3.
Ring Master: deputise for GM in running the Circle and Down Down (a VTH3-specific title - other Hashes tend to use "Religious Advisor" for this role: see following).
Religious Advisor and/or Masters at Arms: assist GM and/or RM at the Down Down by preparing drinks, identifying and/or "shackling" sinners, as required.
On Sec: initiate and/or manage VTH3 correspondence with membership and outside agencies, usually liaising with Grand Master and/or Mismanagement unless performing joint/overlapping roles.
Hash Cash: collect fees (run registration); authorise and manage expenditure over an agreed amount; produce a "profit/loss" report for Mismanagement meetings.
Scribe: write/edit/collate and distribute weekly run reports and related Hash information.
Hash Flash: take and/or collate/edit photos for run reports and website.
Hash Geek: design and populate the website and keep it up to date.
Hare Raiser: identify, train, mentor and/or organise Hares; maintain communication tools in working condition.
Hares: recce and mark trails; brief and shepherd the Pack including "strays"; ensure all in place for a good day.
Medic: supervise carriage and use of first aid kit, usually liaising with Hare/s.
Bus Captain ("Hash Crash"): book transport and liaise with driver/owner (includes payment) and passengers, usually consulting Hare/s, Hash Cash and/or Scribe to confirm head count.
Beermeister: ensure sufficient quantities of ice, beer, water and soft drinks available for each run.
Haberdasher: produce T-shirts and other merchandise as directed by Mismanagement.
Hash Cook: arrange Down Down catering in conjunction with Mismanagement and Hares.
KGB: liaise with Russian-speaking community to ensure relevant Hash info is conveyed and understood.
Thanh Nien Tinh Nguyen - "TNTN" (tourist police): liaise with Vietnamese-speaking community to ensure relevant Hash info is conveyed and understood.
Hounds ("the Pack"): turn up on time in sturdy shoes and loose sports clothing with a bottle of water and the correct small change for the run fee. Enjoy the day!
Volunteers always welcome to help with any of the above tasks and more!
