Jesus Hill
This iconic statue of Jesus is on the lower peak of Small Mountain, overlooking the East Sea with arms outstretched.
We have several ways of accessing the top; the easiest of which involves climbing the several hundred “tourist” steps from Ha Long (beach road).
Once you think you’ve reached the top, you find you’re actually at the foot of a lot more steps leading up to the statue itself. And inside the statue are yet more steps to the lookout positions on the outstretched arms. If you want to go inside, you must be dressed ‘respectably’!
Lots of caves, concrete bunkers and cannons on this hill, depending on the chosen access route. And a nice Circle location is across the road opposite the tourist entrance – or one of the several bia hoi’s along Phan Chu Trinh back towards the town centre.

Lighthouse Hill
There are several different ways to reach the Lighthouse on the highest peak of Small Mountain – with the easiest being up the bitumen road used by locals and tourists (which goes directly past the splendid Arms Museum). Another is via Jesus Hill and along the ridge between the two.
One of the most demanding (but also interesting) trails is via the pagoda steps at 40 Ha Long, and up behind a row of houses before heading vertically up the hillside.
Whichever way you go to the top, urban legend has it that you can see Saigon on a clear day!
