We arrived at our destination under an ominous grey sky where Hares, Faulty Brakes and Mr. T, explained todays trail would take us off the beaten track in to the lush, green forest to climb the mountain, reminding us to pay close attention to the red tape as it would be easy to get lost. After descending we would follow the road 2km back to the down-down location. So on-on we go, passed a graveyard and in to forest. The going was tough as we beat a path through thick undergrowth, abundant bamboo and climbed over large rocks. It was worth the effort to be afforded with a spectacular panorama of Vung Tau, giving us a great perspective of our local stomping ground, Big and Small Mountain. Upon our descent the heavens opened and we trudged down the mountain and along the road in pouring rain. Bedraggled, grazed and tired, the Hashers arrived back at the down-down point where FRBs, Radio Wave and Short Wave, had the eskies laid out, ready for us to quench our thirst with ice cold San Miguel beer. Thankfully the rain subsided as Ringmaster Basil called to order the Circle. Returnee Radio Wave was keen to rate the trail giving a maximum score of 10/10, saying that it was good to come back to Long Son Island and he enjoyed the trail and the weather. We then welcomed three virgin Hashers, juniors Nan, Hung and Tram from Bien Hoa province. Next up were returnees Radio Wave and his daughter Short Wave who explained they hadn’t been on the Hash for 4 months due to focusing on Short Wave’s education and exams. It was also time to assign a Hash name for Ms. Van after a few suggestions she decided that "Iris" would be her Hash Name. Finally Radio Wave nominated Hope Solo and her niece, Tram, to enter the Circle as Sinners. An unusual sin, instead of inappropriate footwear, or new shoes, this sin was for having no shoes! Poor Tram broke one of her shoes on the mountain, so she discarded both shoes and continued in her socks. A true Hasher - we admire her determination. Next week’s run will be on Small Mountain, watch the NEXT RUN box for updates though the week. We’ll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! On Friday night, in celebration of the 6 years since “Uncle”, “Anti” and “Faulty Brakes” reestablished the Vung Tau Hash House Harriers, more than twenty Hashers gathered at Lucy’s Haven Bar to feast on delicious BBQ, washed down with ice cold San Miguel, while watching the sunset over the South China Sea. Here’s to Vung Tau Hashers and the people that have kept it going over the years. Many happy returns! Back to Sunday and under grey skies, we headed to Small Mountain, stopping at the steps next to Cafe 1975, where Boozer would deliver the chalk talk. He explained we would ascend the mountain from these steps and, after a steep climb through the jungle, we would emerge onto the path that would lead to one of the seven artillery bunker complexes built on the Small Mountain. We’d then continue on the path across the mountain ridge to descend at the Buddhist Pagoda, Niet Ban Tinh Xa, and return to Hon Ru Ri. At the bunker complex, Boozer explains that the Cable bunker complex was built around 1895 by French forces. It had a four gun battery emplacement with a 360 degree firing arc, an elevation of 75 meters above sea level, and ammunition storage in the cave bunker 30 meters south of the battery. After a few minutes viewing the complex, it was on-on to the pagoda where, after climbing down the many steps, we arrive at a locked gate. Not to worry though, with each others help, we were able to scale the gate and continue through the pagoda and back along Ha Long for the Down Down at Hon Ru Ri. This week there were no Virgins, Returnees or Sinners, so it was a quick Circle followed by the team photo and some cool, refreshing San Miguels. Next week’s run will be on Long Son Island, watch the NEXT RUN box for updates though the week. We’ll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! Team photo: Long Ringmaster: Basil Report: Basil We all welcome 19 Hashers this week including Returnees and 2 Hash Virgins, Ms Thuy (aka “Jenny”) and Mr Luc. When the Hashmobiles had taken everyone to Hem 750 Tran Xuan Do, the start of the trail to the Cambodian Pagoda, Buddha, Boozer and Faulty Brakes had taken our San Miguel beer to the Haven/Lucy’s for the Down Down and Buddha become our Beer Watcher for the day. We then meet up at Hem 750 and follow the Hare to lead us to the temple for the Chalk-Talk: “The trail start by follow the red tape through a narrow alley way and coming in the pagoda, then immediately turn right to headed out the gate of that pagoda and turn left to head up all the way to another pagoda, then follow the red tape to the jungle and going up the hill to reach the Ho May Park concrete road. Then it is a smooth walk to the Artillery Station, but watch the red tape carefully to turn left onto a dirt road to the 'Lucky Trail', and reach Down Down at Haven/Lucy’s". So 'On-On' we go through the alleyway while saying "Hello" to the local children. When we reach the stairs to another pagoda, Hash Virgin Jenny needed to get back to her work, so Basil asked a local to do that and then he raced up the mountain hoping to catch up to other Hashers, and he did. When we got to the concrete road, this time Hasher Kojak said he had work to do, so he finish his trail and can’t join us at the Down Down. We follow the red tape and found the turning point and follow it to reach the “Lucky” trail that Mountain Shrimp showed us. We carefully descended down the mountain and finally reached the main road, and we just go to the Down Down at Haven/Lucy’s. At this time, we heard from Hashers that Dr Who and Blondie may not see the tape that lead to the Lucky trail and they might have travelled to Hem 444 and walked the long way around to Haven/Lucy's. After they had arrived safely and Jenny finished her work and joined us at the Down Down, Basil started the team photo with Junior Hasher Long quickly volunteer for this job. Then Basil started the Circle with a welcoming message. He bring Hares Secs and Mr T to the Circle and Blondie is nominated to rate the trail since they had walked all the way to the Down Down. Blondie gave the trail 10/10 because the trail is excellent! We then bring in Mr and Ms Jenny, with Mr Luc join the Hash to improve his English and Ms Jenny because coincidence meeting the Hares going to Hon Ru Ri, and the Hash Virgin song is perform by Basil. Returnees haven’t come to the Hash for a long time: Irina and Blondie because they are busy, and Dr Who because of working in Australia: Down Downs for them. Sinners, Buddha the beer watcher, Faulty Brakes and Stubble for inappropriate footwear and Boozer because of his new shoes. Then Basil announced that Friday is a party in The Haven/Lucy’s (to celebrate the 6th anniversary of VTH3 being “Re-Hashed”); everyone is welcome and will pay 120k for set menu, free-flow beer and softies, music and good fun! The party starts at 6:00 P.M. so please be on time (RSVP to Basil or email [email protected]). There were no volunteers from the Circle to set next week’s trail, so watch the NEXT RUN box for updates through the week. We’ll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! FOOTNOTE: A friendly reminder to all Hashers that you are welcome to eat and drink your fill while you're with us, but strictly NO TAKE AWAYS - thank you! VTH3 #793 PHOTO GALLERY
