NÚI TÓC TIÊN
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom
Ringmaster: Chom Chom, Bishop
Report: Secs
Weather: HOT!, azure blue skies.
Hash Cash: 11 am run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 32 + 30 from Saigon (Ms. Nancy Kieu from SGH invited a load of students and their parents to join us)
Trail: Disembarked on dusty road near smallholding for Chalk Talk by Secs: “5km trail up and down the mountain with a steep start, that eases up after a while. You’ll know you're at the halfway point when you arrive at a shady glade with an ancient tree - perfect place for a breather before heading up some steps to a small temple cut into the mountain with a spectacular view point. From there it’s a final push through a track cut between bamboo to the top of the mountain where you’ll find the final viewpoint at 433m.”
Highlights:
  • Beautiful jungle trail with plenty of photo opportunities - big old tree seemed especially popular
  • Friendly monks at the small temple
  • Amazing view from 433m above
  • Kids sliding down the arid scree squealing with glee on the way back down
  • Same kids practicing english with foreigners
Down Down: Shady smallholding surrounded by cashew trees. Very accommodating lady who owned it.
Refreshments: Bún Thịt Nướng (rice noodle with BBQ pork and fish sauce); water melon, Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water.
Circle: 10, 10, 10, 10/10; “tough but rewarding”, “wish I hadn’t said previous trails were too easy”, “ a bit slippery but fun”. Saigon group welcomed with the Vung Tau Hash song. Hash Virgins Julian (Welsh) and wife Thuy(VN); Hans (Norway); Phương Chi and Đức Anh (VN). Returnees welcomed back: Nhuận Hà and Ky (Cemen Trader’s daughter. Virgins’ intro and baptismal sprinkling by Bishop. Circle videographer David thanked.
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy pub, 3A Lê Ngọc Hân.
Next week: Watch this space, facebook page @VungTauHHH and direct emails for details of next week’s run.
PLEASE REMEMBER: We can all help to keep run fees as low as possible by cancelling registration if suddenly unable to attend (the committee can then order a smaller/cheaper bus and fewer meals if necessary).

LONG HAI MOUNTAINS
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Secs
Ringmaster: Uncle, Bishop
Report: Uncle
Weather: Hot, some high cloud.
Hash Cash: 2.15 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Ngoc Xuong eco-tourism resort.
Total Hashers: 33
Trail:  Dismounted Hashmobile in Ngoc Xuong eco-resort (see ‘Down Down’). Paid run fees to Secs and Bull Ant. Chalk Talk by Secs. Followed red marker tapes along dirt track to base of Hon Dung. Rock steps to start of forest then rock-strewn ascent and finally more rock steps to pagoda and lookout rocks at top (with friendly monks and very welcome breeze!). Many photos then continued down other side via dirt track, more rocks, dense and slippery dead leaves and dry bamboo; a long hike along concrete path and steps off the hillside to 150 rock steps with distinctive handrails and yellow posts down to street level, then through the various hamlets past fenced boars and a chorus of barking dogs to start point at Ngoc Xuong eco resort, basically completing a circle. Total distance ~5.2 km.
Highlights: Refreshing breeze and views from lookout point at top of Hon Dung. Watching 4yo Hash Virgin Annie uncomplainingly negotiate rocky climb and descent on v.short legs: “She’s a Hasher, through and through!” Peaceful and relaxing Down Down on eco tourist lakeside lawn while Junior Hashers played on swings and explored local area (still running at high speed!).
Special interest: Item 1.7, Top 9 great ecotourism areas in Vung Tau you should go (vietnamreviewer.com)
Down Down: Ngoc Xuong eco-tourism resort, group 6/70, Hai Binh hamlet, Long Hai.
Refreshments: Banh mi w/bbq pork, veg and noodle fillings, dipping sauce; pineapple, water melon, guava. Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water.
Circle: Avge 12.7/10. “Great scenery”, “Not too difficult”. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant applauded. 7 Hash Virgins (5 Vung Tau, 1 Vinh Long and 4yo Annie from Ba Ria) introduced, welcomed and baptismally sprinkled by Bishop. Hoang Hash-named Scarlett (Katie Scarlett O'Hara Hamilton Kennedy Butler: ‘Gone with the wind’). Bishop reminded everyone to order his chocolate brownies while still available!
On on on: Mr C’s Speakeasy pub, 3A Lê Ngọc Hân.

NUI DINH 'TEMPLE TOWN' LOOP
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom
Ringmaster: Chom Chom
Report: Uncle
Weather: Overcast, plenty of shade.
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 26
Trail: Disembarked outside Ngọc Sơn Dinh pagoda in Nui Dinh Base Area for Chalk Talk by Secs (edited): “Follow red tapes up some steps (650!), through temple then along to another temple and continue the jungle loop following red tape to Down Down location.” It was a superb trail (imo!), with mix of ascents/descents, dirt and rocky tracks full of trees, dead leaves, bamboo and lots of jungle noises. Colourful shrines and temples everywhere (hence trail name), a dry stream bed, locals picnicking, a tribe of grey monkeys, ornamental gravestones, then a series of long descents with hundreds of stone steps and painted red/yellow handrails back to road level. Total distance ~3 km.
Highlights:
  • Sacha presented huge bouquet of Thach Thao flowers to the Hashettes, recognizing 8 March International Women’s Day. The flowers were shared and many smartphone cameras given serious workouts! Asked if the flowers were purposely chosen for same name as Hare Thao (‘Chippy’), Sacha just smiled…
  • Many colourful, interesting shrines and temples/pagodas almost ‘wall to wall’; one boasts ‘Palace mountain relics’ so definitely warrants a return visit.
  • Lookout rock towards end of trail with panoramic views.
  • Grateful 75yo rubbish collector and former singer Tu Ngoc serenaded Hashers at the Down Down with a traditional Mekong Delta song.
Down Down: Shady area outside the end of today’s trail.
Refreshments: Chicken drumsticks, pate, sticky rice, dipping sauce (purchased from Co Nha’s trolley outside 63 Ba Cu – open 5-8 pm daily); water melon, pineapple; Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water. Also chocolate cake slices by Bishop “to tempt the taste-buds”, and delicious carrot and granola cake with cream topping courtesy a former Hasher friend of Chippy’s for IWD.
Circle: 5, 5, 8, 10/10; “easy for me”, “normal”, “lovely trail”. Also voiced later: “Full marks, today’s trail had everything!” Hares applauded. Hash Virgins Nhang and son Tony (Ba Ria) welcomed. Returnees welcomed back: Nha and son Harry (“busy”), Chris (“busy at uni”).

LONG SON REFINERY
Hares: Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant
Hash Flashers: Chippy, Chom Chom
Ringmaster: Chom Chom
Report: Uncle
Weather: Broken high cloud, hot.
Hash Cash: 1 pm run fees Secs, Bull Ant @ Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1.
Total Hashers: 28
Trail:  Hashmobile turned right on Long Son island and followed highway around to disembark adjacent to Long Son Petrochemical refinery (‘LSP’). Chalk Talk by Secs then “On On” uphill following red marker tapes through a fairly dense bamboo forest with slippery dry leaves underfoot. The trail was bone-dry with crumbling rocks in parts requiring some ‘ungainly vertical scrambling’, especially by those with shorter and/or older legs! But it became easier across the hilltop with rock steps and a fairly open dirt track down to a low density residential area with mix of barbed, razor and chicken-wire fences (and a grumpy security guard!).
The all-important marker tapes eventually led to a sealed road around the Mang Ca lake (Hồ Mang Cá) to our Down Down venue, the lakeside (Bờ Hồ) TM Coffee and Homestay. Total distance ~3.5 km.
Highlights: Views of the Long Son Petrochemical refinery. A goat herd passing Mang Ca lake. Culinary specials including Bánh tráng đậu (sticky sugar, peanuts in rice paper), Bishop’s chocolate brownie chunks and Ms Tu’s mum’s dried shrimps.
Special interest: ‘Long Son Petrochemical project begins commercial operation 1 March to produce plastic products for the Vietnamese market such as bottles, jars, tubes, fuel tanks, wrap films, bottle caps, auto parts, washing machines, industrial nets, etc.’ From March 2024: USD 5 billion project officially put into commercial operation - Ba Ria - Vung Tau electronic newspaper (baobariavungtau.com.vn)
Down Down: TM Coffee and Homestay.
Refreshments: Banh mi w/pork and veg, water melon. Bánh tráng đậu (sticky sugar, peanuts, rice paper). Dried shrimps courtesy Ms Tu’s mum. Chocolate brownie chunks courtesy Bishop. Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water.
Circle: 8-11-7.5/10. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant thanked. Returnees Ms Anh (“working hard”), Arseholio (“Hamersley, laying bricks”), Chook (“Australia, working and drinking”), Ms Liz (“holidays, parties”) welcomed back.
Other business:
Bishop spruiked his chocolate brownies for sale (100k vnd for 2 incl. free cookies), also fruit cakes. Contact via Zalo group.
Frank and Yolanda: “Fair winds and following seas”. Have a safe trip and we’ll see you again in November.
