Sunset photos: Tiny Tim Ring Master: SamSon Report: Uncle Plenty of sunshine today as 41 Hashers registered at Café Bi Sắt for the trail on Small Mountain. Some of us wondered why we needed to catch taxi's to the start point at Hem 84 on Phan Chu Trinh, but it soon became apparent that the Hares knew more about the degree of difficulty than we did! Flying Finn explained the trail and off we went up Hem 84 until we encountered a wall that sorted those with long legs from the rest of us(!). For the next hour or so we followed the red markers up and around Small Mountain, with the down bits arguably more demanding than the climbs because the undergrowth was so dry and slippery. We followed a range of familiar "trail parts" up Lighthouse Hill, then around to the southern face of Small Mountain, across to Jesus Hill, and down to exit via the pagoda steps at 40 Halong for the last half mile or so past Lan Rung resort to 1A Halong and the Valley Beach resort, where the food and eskies full of ice-cold San Migs and softies awaited. Some headed into the ocean for a dip, while others decided to get wet on the inside! Then we lined up for the team photo, followed by the Circle - at which time the karaoke machine was muted for a while! Duty Ring Master SamSon invited Shaky to rate the trail, and he gave it 9 + 1 to make a deserved perfect score: 10/10! Then no fewer than 8 Hash Virgins were introduced from Denmark, France and Russia, followed by a welcome back for returnees from Russia (after 10 years!), Vietnam, USA and Australia, and a sinner from Denmark. Then Trinh and James, widow and son of former VTH3 stalwart John "Falcon" Mills came into the Circle to thank everyone for the generous donations that helped them settle into their new life "down under" after the sudden, tragic death of their husband and father in 2014. They were presented with embroidered Hash caps to mark their honorary VTH3 life membership status. Then the Circle was closed so everyone could eat ("feast" would be a more accurate description) and socialise until darkness fell. Next week's trail will be a local one set by Faulty Brakes and Flying Finn because trying to hire a bus on Tet eve would be attempting the impossible! We'll meet again on Sunday at Pétanque Café Bi Sắt, 12 Hung Vuong Street: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! On On! VTH3 #718 PHOTO GALLERY > > > SUNSET OVER VUNG TAU BAY by Tiny Tim

The owner of Bi Sat got a big catch of mangos because their mango tree’s fruit is ripe and they gather to sell the sweet delicious mangos. - 2 Vietnamese Hashers bought mangos for the trip and we get the bus to Giao Xu Long Huong Mountain, and pick up Bac Si House and UXO’s families on the way. - Some Hashers expected to go to Dinh Mountain but the trail was changed in our NEXT RUN box. We stop near Giao Xu Long Huong church and walk to the mountain for a chalk-talk. Many Hashers who saw the Cross on top the mountain, are excited for a new trail and a million-dollar view. - When we reach the base of the mountain, Basil begin his chalk-talk while local villagers and children come to see the group of Hashers. - There won’t be much red tape because the trail is going up the stairs to the Cross and going down to Down Down at the base of mountain. However a Million Dollar View is marked with red arrows and red tape so everyone bring their own camera and going for a shot. - As Hashers climb up the stairs they all remember it was like Jesus Statue, and today only a few tourists and locals visit the place. - Halfway to the top, Hares SamSon and Basil show everyone who like to take this chance for a shot worth million dollars, they turn left where the red arrow and red tape is. The 180 degree view of the city and a finish Dome of the Church is visible to see. - After finish photos, we continue to the top, which is 360 degree view and Terminator climbed the rock and sat down for a mesmerizing view. - Many Hashers took this chance to go up to Virgin Mary’s statue for a 360 degree city view and took photos with each other and family. Hare SamSon headed down first to order sugar cane juices for Hashers. - It was an hour for the Hashers to admire the million-dollar view and everyone was about to go down when Terminator who headed down first was seen going up the stairs again for extra exercise! - As we coming down the base of the mountain, SamSon help serving the juices and the Russians prepare the food for everyone, it is really a good time! - Stubble decided to buy a bunch of flowers and UXO gives it to Ladies Hashers, without explain, but the villagers told Hashers that those flowers are for visitors to present to the Cross or Virgin Mary’s statue. - So Terminator, Kojak and daughter Idaa, Stubble and Ms Chuyen go up the mountain once again to present the flowers while Hashers at the Down Down prepare for group photo. - As soon as everyone is present, the photo was taken by Hash Flash, with many villagers and children gathered to see the happy Hash weekly activity. - A welcome message to Hashers by Ring Master SamSon, then he asked the Circle to rate today’s trail and Hares SamSon and Basil will use the tube for punishment because they think the trail is short, but Terminator is nominated by the Russians and expresses that the trail is worth much more because of the view, so he gives 9/10. - Hash Virgins Linh, niece of Ms Lan, and Darin, daughter of Sveta, are welcomed into the Hash Family. - Returnees Kojak and daughter Idaa, Tiny Tim, Dracula and Catwoman, Peter Pan, and visitor Dumb from Russia. Returnees excused are, “Work” and “Holiday”, so Down Downs for them! - And Sinners, while no one has anyone to point out but Peter Pan decided that someone bring the food is fish but use the water in the eskies as hand washing, so Black Hawk and Sveta were nominated! - Before the Circle was closed, an announcement by Faulty Brakes that next week’s run will be a local trail followed by a visit from two special guests: Trinh and James Mills, widow and son of former VTH3 stalwart John "Falcon" Mills. There will also be an informal “New Hash Year” party after the Circle, which will be held close to the sea on the small island across the road from the bottom of the Jesus Statue steps - so bring a towel and swimming gear if you'd like to take a dip! Everyone is also invited to bring some snacks to share with fellow Hashers... - We'll meet again on Sunday at Pétanque Café Bi Sắt, 12 Hung Vuong Street: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! Many Hashers know the terrain was changed last year, but the Hares managed to find and set a trail again for this revisit. - Among today’s 28 Hashers we had 2 families with kids and the weather isn’t hot, so we thought today might be the best for a while. - But as we passed the cable car complex, the sun started to shine brighter and the weather changed from cool shade to hot and sunny. Hashers quickly grabbed caps from their bags! - When we almost reached the Ganh Hao, the guy who asked us about the Hash last week passed us on his motorbike and waved a greeting. - We start climbing the mountain, however the 2 families decided to split-up because they afraid the smaller kids won’t handle the trail, so some Hashers follow the trail while the rest use the easy route. - The trail went up the mountain, and then half way up we turned right to follow the side of the mountain, and then we came across the changed terrain, with the trail going down a few steps and then go up, but we eventually reached the Vi Ba Café shop. - We stop at the shop for delicious sugar cane drinks, and then went down Vi Ba street to Café Bi Sắt. Some returnees decided to continue up the mountain for more exercise, while the others headed downhill. - Basil spotted the short-cut stairs and led the Hashers down to Le Loi street, and then everyone remembered the way back. - At Bi Sắt Café, we were met by ice cold San Miguel and soft drinks, and delicious Russian food, so all was perfect! - The group photo was taken, and Basil donned the “chains of honour” to start the Circle. - A welcome message to Hashers, and then he asked the Circle to rate today’s trail by Hares Faulty Brakes and Flying Finn. Titanic was nominated and Robert volunteered. While both liked the trail, Titanic only gave 7/10 because of the sun(!), and Robert gave 9/10, so the score was settled at 8/10. - Hash Virgins Svita and Michael are employed by Vietsovpetro, and their child Masha joined the Hash because she loves outdoor activities. They were all introduced by Blackhawk and Titanic. - Returnees Alex and Ross gave familiar excuses: “Work” and “Holiday”, so Down Downs for them! - Sinner Faulty Brakes was a Hare but forgot the trail and got lost – big Down Down! - Before Basil closed the Circle, he announced that next week’s trail will be an away run set by SamSon (see NEXT RUN box on our home page). And the following week will be a local trail with special guests, John “Falcon” Mill’s widow Trinh and son James, who want to thank the Hash for their much-needed support at the time of their tragic loss a little more than a year ago. We also plan an informal “New Year” party at the Down Down on 31/1; it will be held in a nice place next to the sea, so bring your swimming gear if you fancy a refreshing dip! Basil plans to provide some delicious snacks and everyone is encouraged to bring a plate* to share with others. *"Bring a plate" doesn’t mean a real plate – just a few snacks in a paper bag will do, as long as they can be shared around! - In the meantime, we'll meet again on Sunday at Pétanque Café Bi Sắt, 12 Hung Vuong Street: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather! One foreigner asked where Hashers all meet, so we told him we always meet at 12 Hung Vuong street: Café Bi Sắt. - We stopped at Hem 84 Phan Chu Trinh where Hare Flying Finn awaited, then Hare Faulty Brakes gave chalk talk and “On On” we go! - We take short-cut up the stairs and turn right into our familiar yet nostalgic trail set by popular but now departed Mountain Goat; there was a stray dog running around, probably trying to find his way home. - After rock climbing, we come across the cement road to the lighthouse. Hash Virgins never imagine they come across this trail. Then Faulty Brakes reveal another trail to lighthouse instead of using the road! - The trail cut around the military antenna and our presence alerted the guard dog; however, all is well after we leave the area. The trail had a lot of thorny vines, but we all get through by helping each other. - We reach the lighthouse through that trail, and we got option to go up the light house and sightseeing before go down the road and turn left to the old Bunker and lookout point for the Down Down (last used for run #486, 27.08.2011!). - When we arrived, SamSon had already bring the eskies at the Down Down and we exchanged some history about the Bunker while drinking ice-cold San Miguel beer and softies. - We all took the group photo and Ring Master SamSon called the Circle early because some Hashers had business to attend. - Returnee Rita was called to rate the trail. She praised the trail and gave 8/10. However, Ring Master added an extra point for a fantastic Down Down area, making 9/10. - Hash Virgins Mr Hau and Ms Huong was introduced by their English teacher, Knob Doctor. While they can’t speak much English, SamSon translated for them. - Returnee Rita missed 4 weeks because of Christmas, New Year and Christmas again, and awarded with Down Down. - And Sinners: Mary, UXO and Rajah for using short-cut. Experienced Hashers notice the short-cut but still no excuse for not following the red marker tape! - Ring Master announced next week’s trail would be Big Mountain, then we closed the Circle and finished packing to leave the area for the couples and other teenagers who had watched Hasher Circle activity with lots of interest! - We'll meet again on Sunday at Pétanque Café Bi Sắt, 12 Hung Vuong Street: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather!
