After some creative parking by our driver, we dismounted for the Chalk Talk by co-Hare Rowdy Water and then it was "On On" along a narrow sealed road for several hundred metres until the dreaded yellow marker ("Wrong way - Go back") signalled a sharp left turn into dense and very prickly brush. The terrain was mostly flat at the outset; but it wouldn't last, of course, and it wasn't much longer before we encountered the hilly stuff, strewn with boulders. On and on we went through more prickly bush, when the usual cries of "On On" were suddenly replaced by a more agonised "Ow Ow" - as a small group of Hashers stopped to check the way just long enough for an army of ants to attack in force! The trail was shorter than usual, in deference to the extreme heat (37C), but was nevertheless extremely enjoyable, with plenty of local scenery on show when we got back to ground level - including the usual playful children and a large group of very contented water buffalo cooling off in a pond. The FRBs were relaxing with a few coldies, courtesy of major sponsor San Miguel, when it became apparent that our driver's parking skills had been so creative they were likely to create a traffic jam, so we picked up the eskies and moved - not across the road as you might expect, but across the road AND two paddocks! Much relaxed chit chat ensued as the motley bunch of Hashers snacked on Mountain Goat's delicious Russian bread with pickles and salted pork, until the Circle was eventually called. Uncle awarded the trail an excellent score of -100 because he was happy to have survived in one piece, given his lack of "match fitness" and the heat (see "Kindness to older Hashers" above), Ronald Reagan gave it an 8/10, and No Name Bob added 150, to make the final score something no-one really cared about because Hares Rowdy Water and KFC were already "Doing a Down Down"! Half a dozen or so virgins were collectively deflowered and welcomed to the fold, then one of them - tentatively answering to 'Jeff' - was exposed for committing the cardinal sin of being first one home! Another sinner, Hard Drive, was outed for dropping unidentified objects down people's shorts ("icing" - VTH3-style). Returnees Uncle and Anti were welcomed back, and the Circle closed with the welcome news that Rowdy Water, KFC and Falcon will lay a trail in the Long Hai Mountains for next Sunday's run #631. More good news is that Hasher Marc and his wife My have offered to supply some apres-run sandwiches next week from their newly-opened My Shop at 34 Lương Văn Can, Ward 2 (all imported foods and products - take-away and home deliveries). A Chalk Talk by Hot Dog and then it was "On On" up the many, many steps to the top. At the base of the Jesus statue we turned right and headed down some old steps leading to a downhill trail, which we followed until it emerged onto the dirt road that heads back around to the statue. From there it was down to the many, many steps (in reverse) until we reached ground level, from where it was a mere(!) 2 kilometres of flat ground to our recently-discovered favourite spot in the area: the balcony at 32 Ha Long, opposite the Lan Rung resort. Hareraiser SamSong had excelled himself once more by delivering the eskies even though he'd been prevented from joining the run by work commitments. "Well done, that man!" After quenching our thirsts on San Migs and soft drinks, the Circle was called and SamSon and Hot Dog were awarded just 4/10 for the trail. Why so low, you might ask? Not their fault at all - it was the blind leading the blind in the pack who didn't turn right at the Jesus statue and instead just came down the "tourist steps"! Hash Virgins Anatoly (Russia), Ms Thao and Ms Trang (both VN) were welcomed, as were returnees Titanic, D&G, UFO, Truong and Rowdy Waters. The usual suspects were penalised for sins real and imagined - and the day was made complete by Mountain Goat's "always welcome" Russian snacks! KFC and Rowdy Waters have agreed to lay a trail this week on Long Son island - so we'll meet as usual, 2 for 2.30 pm start, Offshore Bar 1 beer garden. See you there! On On! Some 20 or so keen Hashers set off in the enervating heat from Offshore Bar 1 on Sunday - the temperature was showing a sultry 39C. It was great to see some of our Russian Hashers again after a few weeks absence due to various professional and personal commitments. We arrived as a group at the back of Lucy's Bar, and set off up the side of Lighthouse Hill. The enthusiastic group quickly separated into the FRBs led by Terminator and K9 Yoffi, and the remainder of the pack sweltering their way uphill as best they could. After following the paved road for a while, the trail broke off into the bush and scrub with everyone encouraging each other in typical Hash fashion until, with a great sigh of relief that was probably heard down at sea level, the road was once again reached! It was widely believed that it would be only a casual downward stroll to the waiting eskies, but the dastardly Hares had other plans and, once again, the trail took off into the bush - this time heading upwards towards the lighthouse. Despite some mutinous groans from several of the pack, we all finally made it to the top to find the well rested front runners admiring the view! After a suitable pause for everyone to catch their breath and enjoy the scenery, it was "On On" along a trail first set several years ago to link both peaks of Small Mountain, and we all headed down the slopes before wending our way past some surprised locals outside their homes to eventually reach the main road. A very welcome RV was made with volunteer beermeister Jeff with his sore knee and our precious eskies in a cafe overlooking the sea at 32 Ha Long. Some of the exhausted Hashers stripped off (more or less), crossed the road and dived into the sea. Others decided to let "Doctor San Miguel" cool them down! In true Russian style our returnees including Tiny Tim and Terminator set up the pork, black bread and pickles together with obligatory vodka - it was a fine sight to behold! A very convivial time was enjoyed by all, with co-Hare SamSon leading the bonhomie. Ronald Reagan, playing a fine role as Ring Master, called the Circle where we welcomed a somewhat "hot and tired" VTH3 Virgin John Doran from Ireland (via Korea and various other exotic locations); also welcomed our returnees; and bestowed a new Hash monicker on co-Hare Ut, who shall forever more be known in Hash Circles as "Miss Banana"! And so the afternoon drew to a close, as the exhausted but happy Hashers ticked off yet another extremely pleasant VTH3 afternoon! The Gardener and Miss Banana are now taking a temporary leave of absence and we wish them well - we've really appreciated your willingness to "get stuck in" and lay some trails that we've all enjoyed. Come back soon, ya hear! In the meantime, SamSon has enthusiastically taken over the role of Hareraiser in the absences of Falcon (injury) and The Gardener. He will be supported this week by new Hares Linh, Ice Water and Hot Dog to set a new trail on Small Mountain for next Sunday - so we'll meet again as usual at Offshore Bar 1 beer garden, 2 pm for 2.30 pm start. See you there! On On! Reporting: Taffy, Uncle Hares: Miss Banana, The Gardener, SamSon Hash Flash: Hot Dog and friends VTH3 #628 PHOTO GALLERY>>>>>>>

We then loaded the eskies and boarded the bus for the relatively short trip to Long Son Island via the Go Gang turnoff and two new bridges. We dismounted at the trail start - a wide, flat road strewn with small stones. Co-Hare Ut (Banana Lady) told the bus driver how to find the trail destination and then it was "On On" after a Chalk Talk from Ronald Reagan. After about 500 metres of relatively smooth travelling, we turned left onto a single dirt track which, again, was relatively easy going - at least until we reached the cave. And that's where everything changed to remind us that this was a Hash, not an afternoon stroll! Up the hill we struggled - through bamboo, thorns, trees, more thorns, more trees, even thorny trees(!), all "brightened up" by the occasional flower! Then we encountered the large boulders and rock terraces, before finally reaching the big rock temple at the top - phew! We stopped to enjoy the view and take a well-deserved rest - all except young Ivanhoe, that is. He decided to explore the area while Mum & Dad Dolly and RR relaxed (because that's what little boys do, right?). And then it was time for the descent - a right turn took us down the ridge trail with extensive views of salt and oyster farms. It was a long descent through more bamboo, past the local graveyard and then the pig farms - until we finally arrived at a new and very relaxing Circle location after quite a challenging day in the Vung Tau-Ba Ria countryside. Once the Circle was called, the trail was awarded the excellent score of 9/10 - including very well-deserved additional points for "degree of difficulty". We welcomed just one visitor this week, but the pet parrot has unfortunately swallowed my notes so we can't name him here - sorry about that! Next week's trail has been set by The Gardener, Banana Lady and SamSon. It's a 40% new trail on Small Mountain, with a wild orchard near the end where some exotic fruits can be picked for eating at the Circle location - which is a balcony across the road from the beach near Lan Rung resort. If you think you might fancy a swim after the run, bring a bag/towel and leave it at registration for transport to the Circle location with the eskies. We'll meet, as usual, in Offshore Bar 1 beer garden at 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - see you there! On On!
