Hares: Faulty Brakes, Basil, (Uncle, Sec, "unavoidably absent on the day") Hash Flash: Paddy Ringmaster: SamSon Report: Basil Today's weather is kind for us with lots of cloud, so 28 Hashers joined today's local run. We fortunate to be visited by Tasmanian Hasher “Spof”; unfortunately, he had a broken leg so had to sit this run out! We all headed down to Le Ngoc Han street and walked up the Hem 89 stairs to be greeted by our usual barking dog before continuing on to Vi Ba. Bazz finally met his match with the powerful foe: “The stairs”, so he headed back and vowed to have his revenge one day! When everyone arrived at Vi Ba, we headed to the Trail “M90” and Basil started the chalk-talk: "First head up the mountain until you see the red tape that indicates left, follow it to reach the open plateau crossroads, then two choices: on the left is the shortcut down to Vi Ba, and on the right is the trail up the mountain and along Ho May Park's wall and down the line of electricity poles to reach the temple, turn right and follow the concrete road then back into the woods and follow the red tape down the mountain to coming out “M90” again and we shall head back to Hon Ru Ri for Down Down". Then “On-On” we went up the mountain, and turned left at the shown red tape. When we reached the plateau and Hare Faulty Brakes was waiting for his Co-Hare Basil, some Hashers decided to follow the Waterfall trail since it wasn't as hard as the Double Lego trail but not as easy as the shortcut, and Basil kept them company. Faulty Brakes' group followed the trail up the mountain for a beautiful scenery of Vung Tau City and cool breeze that refreshed all the Hashers. They all came down the trail of electric pole and reached the temple, then finally followed the red tape to the M90 shop. Basil’s group followed the Waterfall trail and came out onto Vi Ba street near Ho May Park, then all went down to the sugar cane kiosk for take-away refreshment and on to the Monkey Pagoda with lots of tourists giving food to the monkeys. As time was running out, Basil’s group took a shortcut through White Villa to reach Hon Ru Ri, but Basil then realized he would become a Sinner for that! When everyone had finished the trail safely, late-arrival ringmaster SamSon called the group photo and started the Circle. Visitor “Spof” asked what the photo was for, so we explained, “For our sponsor”! After the welcome message, we called the Hares: Faulty Brakes and two who were unavoidably absent today, “Uncle” (family bereavement) and “Sec” (visa run). “Super Teen” rated the easy trail 8/10 and “Paddy” gave the hard trail 10/10, so total is 18/20. Well done Hashers and Hares! We brought in Hash Virgins Ms Van, and another Ms Van, Ms Trang from the Vietnamese club, and Mr Hoang, a friend of Paddy, and we have a Hash Virgin song for them. Next we brought in Returnees Lady D with excuse "Working" and "Lazy", Hot Lips was "Busy", Titanic and D&G had "Work", "Sick" and "Lazy to get up from the couch", and Ms Dung was "Working": Down Down for them, with Tube of Shame for Titanic who gave a splendid demonstration of how not to spill a drop! Sinners were Basil for helping the shortcutters, Bazz for surrendering to the foe, and Aqua for taking a shortcut: Down Downs again, with Bass showing how to spill many drops! We brought in Visitor “Spof” from Tasmania Hash, who told us the Tassie Hash is so good the local police will give them a drive home after the Down Downs! And he was happy to have met a wonderful Vung Tau Hash, and wishes he could have come earlier but for his injured leg. So Basil give him a Hash Virgin song (some confusion between Virgins and Visitors - perhaps because both begin with "V"!). Two more Hash Virgins, 14yo Khanh and his Mom, Ms Trang from Ninh Binh and a friend of Lady D, had just finished the trail because they were visiting the temple at the same time. The joined the Circle at the last minute; Khanh said he really liked the Hash and will come back next week, so Basil performed his third Hash Virgin Song of the day! With no volunteer Hares in this week's Circle, please check the website for NEXT RUN details later in the week. Then we'll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start. Hare: Uncle Hash Flash: Uncle. Additional photos: Aqua Ringmaster: Basil Report: Uncle It was another partly overcast day as we loaded the eskies onto a shiny, new bus at Hon Ru Ri for the short journey to Seaview apartments, where we were met by Terminator and family, Hash Virgin Julia (Superteen's teacher) and Aurora, with Paddy arriving just before we set off for the hike north through Seaview, Ward 10, across Highway 51 and along the sandy trails through the rural area down to the beach. The trail had an in-built diversion near the Le Quy Don school to bypass the "water jump" which had become a small lake with the onset of the rainy season; but another surprise was in store as we reached the bridge to escape the water jump - it was being covered in wet concrete! Fortunately, the workers took the interruptions in good humour as we continued on our merry way! We eventually reached the bus in bright sunshine, which luckily gave way to lots of clouds - so those who preferred the pavement to the beach had plenty of shade! After welcome refreshments and much socialising, Basil convened the team photo and then called the Circle. Bazz scored the trail 10/10, so we were off to a good start! No fewer than five Hash Virgins this week: Julia, Ms Thao, Eugene, Thao's brother Hoang, and Ms Linh - welcome all! Two returnees: Pedometer (after more than 4 years!), and Lam. Sinners were Uncle (new shoes), Paddy (arriving late) and Faulty Brakes (left his new shoes at home!). Next Sunday is the last in May, and big crowds of devotees are expected at the pagodas on Nui Dinh and Minh Dam, so Uncle and Faulty Brakes will mark a new combination "Double Lego" trail on Big Mountain - which will include a shorter trail for those who prefer to avoid clambering over rocks! Additional photos: Tommy Ringmaster: SamSon Report: Uncle It was another partly overcast day as we gathered at Hon Ru Ri for taxis to the Lucy's/Haven start point for today's "Lucky" trail (named by Mountain Shrimp, whose brother showed her the trail). We left the eskies downstairs at Lucy's/Haven and walked across bãi đậu ("the parking lot") to the Võ Văn Kiệt school start point. Uncle's chalk talk explained that it was a fairly long mountain trail (5.9 km), but not difficult after the initial short climb. A short-cut was marked by double red-tapes, then straight up the side of the mountain to eventually turn right onto the Hem 444 extension and follow "Ho May Park track" through two hamlets, and then a long'ish hike to the shrine and 633 steps down to Tran Phu. Another right turn, then back along Tran Phu to Lucy's/Haven for refreshments, socialising, and an optional swim. So "On On" we went, up through the fairly dense vegetation and then enjoying the views of shipyards on one side and Vung Tau Bay on the other as we crossed the ridge between two peaks. We finally reached the prominently-marked turn-off to the shrine and 633 steps, then a knee-trembling descent later, bit of a waterfront hike, and we were at the beach! Lots of socialising until everyone had safely returned (monitored by walkie talkie), and then we posed on the beach for the team photo before climbing back up the few steps to Lucy's/Haven for the Circle called by duty Ringmaster SamSon. Nominated trail assessor Terminator liked the new "Lucky" trail and gave 10/10 to hares Uncle and Faulty Brakes. Uncle thanked Mountain Shrimp for showing us most of the trail. Hash Virgins Bazz, Vadima and Ms Huong were welcomed. Returnee Tommy did a superb job with the tube of shame; then several Sinners were called into the Circle including Bazz (tube of shame - oh dear!), then Terminator and UFO for going the wrong way, Uncle who volunteered that it was his fault (anything for a free beer!), and Anthony. UFO, Uncle and Anthony excelled themselves with the Sinners cups! Next on the agenda was a naming for Andy. He used to run a bar called The Office, so it was suggested that he be called "Manager". This was quickly re-hashed to become "Secretary", which in turn became "Sec". And so we welcomed "Sec" to VTH3! Then we learned that the local teenage boy with brain damage (nominated by Hope Solo last week as a Red Dress Run charity recipient) now has his ongoing treatment sponsored by a generous former employer, so we were thanked for our offer of help but it's not required at this stage. We'll evaluate any new nominated charities as we get closer to the end of this year, ie Christmas or Tet. No volunteers from the Circle to set next week's trail, but we have a couple of options including a local "Double lego" trail and "Seaview to the beach", so keep an eye on the NEXT RUN box. Uncle later also explained that we can't afford to produce "25 years/800 runs" t-shirts the same design standard or fabric quality as our superb "700 runs" shirts (thanks to generous sponsorship from Mr T and Shirts North), so he'll be shopping around in Saigon this week to see what he can find (thanks to those who have already supplied leads and/or designs - they'll all be followed up). We'll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start. On On! VTH3 #785 PHOTO GALLERY GPS LUCKY TRAIL VTH3 #785 (5.9 km) > > >

Hares: SamSon, Mr Dan Hash Flash: Paddy Ringmaster: Basil Report: Uncle It was a nicely overcast day as we gathered at Hon Ru Ri for the bus trip to Nui Dinh, 5 km west of Ba Ria. We collected Terminator and family on the way, as well as Aurora and co-Hare Mr Dan - and we met Paddy on the mountain, as he lives nearby and decided to "drop in" after work! The bus parked at the end of the sealed road near the top of the mountain, just before the dirt track around to the lake, with an option of two trails. Roughly half of the pack went for the more difficult "short cut" which involved climbing or scrambling up steep slopes to meet the other half who'd walked around to the same point on the combined dirt and concrete track. Then we headed off into the dense jungle and all eventually found our way along the well-marked trail to reach the lookout point, before heading back (on a different trail) and hoping to catch any "strays" along the way, with Lead Hare Mr Dan giving his best impression of a sheep-herder! (co-Hare SamSon was absent at work). All the while, we were accompanied by darkening skies, a few drops of rain and the ominous rumble of thunder - which thankfully never arrived! We managed to get the eskies and food off the bus (now only 2 eskies - anyone seen the other one?), and were all settling down for the usual socialising when the bus driver decided that we needed our lungs filled with carbon monoxide as he and some local monks worked on the dodgy bus engine amid bursts of rancid, black smoke! The bus finally moved further down the road while we posed for the team photo and Ringmaster Basil called the Circle, with Mr Dan taking plaudits for an excellent, well-marked trail: 10/10! Three Hash Virgins were welcomed: Bryce, from Darwin (Australia), Anthony from England and Ms Sam from Vung Tau (whose job is to promote our sponsor's beer - she's a "San Miguel girl"!). Returnee Rita claimed "too many parties" for her (short) absence - Down Down please! Uncle had worked up a thirst by this time, so he volunteered himself as a sinner for missing a turn-off; Bryce was nominated for not wearing enough footwear, and Anthony for wearing too much! Then we had a naming ceremony for Mr Dan. His Vietnamese name is pronounced "Yun" but it's spelt "Dan" in English, so welcome Mr Dan! And of course the Radio Wave "lens of honour" for Hash Flash Paddy! Uncle volunteered to set the "Lucky" trail for next week and explained that it was named by Mountain Shrimp whose brother had shown her the trail that she in turn showed to Uncle. A little "topping and tailing" will be required to minimise taxi fares and Down Down costs, but it will mostly be a new trail on Big Mountain - and hopefully with the option of a swim at the beach afterwards. Also an announcement that Hope Solo has nominated a very unfortunate local teenage boy as the recipient for aid from our next Red Dress Run (tentatively scheduled for next month, June - more details in due course). He comes from a poor family and was the innocent but severely injured party in a road accident on the way home from martial arts class (the guilty party ran away and was never caught). He's already had brain surgery, but now requires funds for ongoing medicines and treatment - which his poor family can't afford. The Circle agreed we should pursue further, so Basil will speak to the boy's family and relevant authorities before proposing our commitment. And then we sat around and talked, and ate, and drank, and talked, and ate, and drank - until the replacement bus finally arrived for our journey home! We'll meet again on Sunday, as always, at Hon Ru Ri: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start. On On! VTH3 #784 PHOTO GALLERY
