Hares: Cousin, Basil Hash Flash: Cousin. Circle photos: Tiger Ringmaster: SamSon Report: Basil Today’s trail is local, based on a request from last week’s Hash. However, the Hasher who requested it wasn’t here! But we fortunately have plenty of Hash Virgins who join us, and a surprise returnee, Taffy. Basil start the Chalk-Talk at Hon Ru Ri because when they reach Vi Ba street, there is no shade to cover Hashers while listening to Chalk-Talk. He explained that the trail starts on Vi Ba street, then go left and turn right after the pagoda to climb up the mountain track, then turn left at the plateau crossroads to go around and under the cable cars and keep going until you reach the broken road near the top of the mountain. After that it’s a stroll down the road until follow the red tape and go down and through one of Vung Tau’s famous historical buildings, White Villa. Chalk-Talk finished, it was “On On” to Vi Ba. Junior Hasher Oggy with his new friends Matt and John are fast following the other Hashers; however, John worry about his mother so he walk slower. When we start climbing the mountain, a group of teenagers follow the Hashers but they don’t know whether the trail Hashers climb will lead to their destination. When they ask, they realise they not on the way to their destination so they quickly turn back. The Hash Virgins who climb this trail feel tired because they never usually exercise this hard like Hashers, plus the weather is hot so more water was consumed. We were relieved to pass the hard part and follow the trail under the cable cars, with a clear view of Front Beach and Small Mountain. The Hash Virgins took this chance for a photo. We also catch up some exercise folk who always use this trail for exercise. As we come out to the broken cement road, it is an easy walk down to White Villa. So Basil headed there first and left the Virgins to take their time coming down to White Villa. However, it is a long time waiting at the White Villa, so Basil go back to Hon Ru Ri to make sure the drinks from our sponsor San Miguel are being consumed by our Happy Hashers after the work-out. After the group photo was taken by Hash Flash Cousin, SamSon then donned the chain of office to start the Circle and the Hash Virgins arrived at the same time! A welcome message from Ringmaster and Hares Basil and Cousin were called to the Circle. The Hares chose Rajah to rate the trail. A good trail and with hot weather, he give a 9.9/10, and the Circle agreed. Then with Hash Virgins Ms Thu who contacted Mismanagement about the Hash, Ms Hoa, Ms Thu with her kids Matt and John, Ms Luyen and Ms Lien who found the Hash themselves, so Down Down for all, and welcome to the Hash! Then Returnees Taffy and Ms Linh with excuses “Holiday” and “Busy”, so only Ms Linh with not a good excuse so she has to wear the tube. Then Sinners, the four ladies who arrived late for the Circle: Ms Thu, Ms Luyen, Ms Linh and Ms Thu. Announcement to the Circle that today is ever-present Rajah’s last Hash with VTH3, because he must go back to Singapore for work. Ringmaster has a present for him to always remember the Hash, and we hope to see him again. Finally, an announcement about next week’s Joint Hash with Saigon Hash (SH3). The trail we all choose is Minh Dam secret zone, and if anyone would like to join SH3 after the run and continue to Ho Tram and camping overnight with another run on Nui Dinh on the Monday (all at additional cost), they are welcome to tell SH3 their name and they will try to arrange transport back to Vung Tau when they return to Saigon after Monday's run. We’ll meet again on Sunday at 2 pm for 2.30 pm start at Hon Ru Ri floating restaurant – about 30 metres east of the Ho May Park cable car complex on Tran Phu (see website home page for details). We see some familiar faces at Hon Ru Ri, then it is time to board the bus to Seaview apartments on Vung Tau’s “northern beaches”. On the bus, Basil gave out maps that Uncle prepared and then we got off for Chalk-Talk about the trail, even though the map is given to many Hashers, because Basil had also marked some turning corners to help keep everyone on the right trail. Then it is “On-On” to the trail, which many Hashers remember from September when it was raining, with water rising and mud. But now, the trail isn’t muddy anymore because there’s a drought! Japanese Hasher Ichi not only brought his hat, he also bring his umbrella on this occasion! As we walk to the river where we turn and walk straight 3 km to Le Quy Don school, returnee Robert tell us his experience with Saigon Hash a few weeks ago when he got a job in Ho Chi Minh City. We hike past a small field with lots of cows resting under shady trees. Returnee Tiny Tim swiftly got his trustee camera for a good shot – also Hash Virgins who join the first time and surprised to see up close to these animals. As we nearly arrive to the disused billboard shown on the map, Mother Teresa and Liuda go to the wrong side – but it is a short cut to the school. We manage to arrive on the major highway and safely crossed the busy road as Ho Chi Minh folks come and go to Vung Tau. While we almost arrive at end of the trail, we were so focused on story sharing, that we go the wrong way except for Mother Teresa and Liuda. Lucky Basil noticed and notify those who almost gone too far. As we arrive to the bus for our Down Down, Mother Teresa bring out her delicious Russian cuisine while Oggy and Stubble took this chance to go for a swim. Oggy even fished out one small fish during his swim! Others took this chance to get a little sea to their fish and watched the daily activity of a fisherman. While he caught many fish, he also caught some trash in his net – which reminded us to keep environmental friendly. We took the group photo and Basil started the Circle with a welcome message that we arrive on Hash #729 – a milestone to reach 750 in September, and then 800 next year! He then bring out the Hare, which only himself as a Live Hare. Titanic volunteer to rate the trail. He give the trail 7/10 because weather is hot and many remember this trail from last year; he really miss this trail when it was muddy! Then we welcomed Hash Virgins, Ms Huong, whom Basil introduced, and she brought her friend Ms Dung from Ho Chi Minh; and Mr Tuan Anh whom introduced by Ms Trang, so here’s to the Virgins and their “sponsors”. Returnees with excuses are Tiny Tim and Pavel for “Working Offshore”, Titanic “Tour guide his friend”, Ms Ly “Travel”, Robert for “Work” and Blackhawk for “Health”. We are all happy to see them all again! And Basil is only Sinner because as Live Hare he should leave the trail as it was, but decided to mark somewhere and did not do a good job. Before we ended the Circle, an announcement that Saigon Hash (SH3) had come to VTH3 and discussed a joint VTH3-SH3 run on Sunday May 1st. They also welcome any Hasher from VTH3 to join them on staying 1 night in Ho Tram and a second run on Monday May 2nd. After that they will go back to Ho Chi Minh City and try to arrange transportation for anyone wanting to go back to Vung Tau. So we'll do a joint run with SH3 on Sunday May 1st, and if anyone wants to stay with SH3 for Sunday night at Ho Tram and a second run on Monday May 2nd, let Basil know and he will email the names of participants to SH3. No volunteers to set next week’s trail, but some suggest a local run because they will bring their foreign friends to explore the beauty of Vung Tau City - so watch the NEXT RUN box (on our home page) later this week for more details. We’ll meet again on Sunday at 2 pm for 2.30 pm start at Hon Ru Ri cafe/restaurant (formerly known as Sao Bien 4 – about 30 metres east of the Ho May Park cable car complex on Tran Phu). On On! Hares start the chalk-talk that today the trail starts in Vi ba and ends at the Temple/Pagoda in Tran Phu street, when we shall take “Hashmobiles” back to Hon Ru Ri for the Down Down. Today’s hares use flour and shredded paper to mark the trail for a change from our usual red eco-tape markers. We all start walk to Le Loi street and on to Vi ba. As soon as we walk to Vi ba, we almost turn the wrong way because the flour and “other things” have same colour and Hares put the flour near the wall so it won’t make a mess in the middle of the road. We walk up the hill and stairs to a small shrine, then followed the trail to the hill. At first it is alright but as soon as we follow the big dirt road, the road ended and the trail must go around the mountain. As we walk around the side of the mountain, we are lucky to help one another because it is slippery and it is almost like 70 degree mountain and similar to one of Mountain Goat’s rugged trails. As soon as we passed the steep slope, it is a smooth walk to the Cambodian Temple. At this point, some Hashers already empty 1 bottle of water because of the weather, so we are lucky to get some help by mountain residents: they give us some water for our journey. We continued up to the familiar track that a horse was running around in the middle of our trail 2 years ago; then we follow through a small wood and come back to one of Faulty Brakes and Flying Finn trails from last month. We go down the step of stairs in the middle of local village, and as we come near the coffee shop the hares recommend us for some drink and a break until we continue down the mountain and come out at the temple. Then we all took Hashmobiles to Hon Ru Ri for Down Down. We get to meet some new people and then SamSon don the chain of honour and started the Circle. A welcome message and he bring out the Hares family, and Shaky volunteers to rate the trail. He quickly gives the trail 10/10, for a very challenging and interesting trail. We welcome the Hash virgins Ms Trang, Ms Huong and a Japanese teacher, just call him Ichi, and they are introduced by Basil. Returnees: of course we welcomed back Perro Caliente and family Ben and Ms Oanh, and a Vietnamese returnee Mr Anh whom his excuses are school - which the Circle disapprove because no school on Sundays! A sinner: SamSon for forgetting who Perro Caliente is because they meet frequently before and met in 2014 and 2015; also Ms Lien who frequently take a break and the Hares have to wait for her. SamSon called Ms Linh to the Circle and introduced the Hash that she join more than 6 times so she need a Hash Name. Mother Teresa saw her wearing a rosy shirt, so she decided that Ms Linh shall be known as “Rose”. Last, we thank you Foodie, Mother Teresa, for always treated the Hash for delicious snacks! Announcement to Hashers that on Sunday 1 May we got a group of Saigon Hash will participant in a joint run. They leave the trail setting to us and will go whichever trail VTH3 go. They wish to avoid city trails and get a “Million Dollar View” trail which is also VTH3’s motto! Next week trail we plan to go “Seaview to the Sea” (with Live Hares and maps), and we will decide where to go for a “Million Dollar View” on 1 May. Already some people suggest Minh Dam, Long Hai and Big Mountain – and the final selection will be announced and then appear in the NEXT RUN box, as usual. In the meantime, we’ll meet again on Sunday at 2 pm for 2.30 pm start at Hon Ru Ri floating restaurant formerly known as Sao Bien 4 – about 30 metres east of the Ho May Park cable car complex on Tran Phu (see our home page for details). Additional photos: Smiley, Radio Wave Ringmaster: SamSon Report info: Flying Finn. Editing: Uncle We met at our favourite cafe/floating restaurant Hon Ru Ri (aka Sao Bien 4) for the trip out to the Long Hai Mountains. Everyone's watches must have been slow because all arrivals made it with just minutes to go before scheduled departure time! Then it was "On On" to Monkey Pagoda in the Long Hai Mountains - a pleasant trip of about 30 minutes or so. A short chalk-talk near the pagoda and then we started the climb up, up and still up - maybe 2,300 steps in total to the few houses near the peak! All of us were covered in sweat and quite winded, but we successfully reached the two massive boulders at the top which mark a formidable gateway across the peak for those brave enough to take the challenge (no room for claustrophobia between those two boulders!). From here it was mostly downhill all the way and, 20 minutes or so later we spotted the Hashmobile with eskies full of ice-cold San Migs and softies. We were also joined by an extremely sociable group of youngsters in yellow t-shirts who wanted to get into our team photo for a "group selfie" (see photo gallery below). After plenty of socialising and snacking on Mother Teresa's delicious food (again!), Ringmaster SamSon called the Circle. Our regular scribe was absent this week, but our best memory was that Mother Teresa and Radio Wave rated the trail, there was one Hash Virgin, three returnees including Smiley, and lots of Circle shenanigans - a good time was had by all! As far as next week's trail goes, we discovered last week that Perro Caliente is making his annual visit to Vung Tau and has volunteered to set a "mystery trail" on Big Mountain for next Sunday (10 April) - it's a "mystery trail" because he knows where it will be, but we don't! If anyone else is interested in volunteering to help set a trail, either locally or within our "territory" of the northern beaches, Long Son Island, Nui Dinh and Minh Dam, please let us know by email to [email protected] or via the Contact VTH3 link on this website, or talk to Basil at registration any Sunday. In the meantime, we’ll meet again on Sunday at 2 pm for 2.30 pm start, at Hon Ru Ri floating restaurant (aka Sao Bien 4) – about 30 metres east of the Ho May Park cable car complex on Tran Phu (see website home page for details).
