Chalk talk by Secs (edited): “Continue on sealed road for 200m then turn right into jungle and follow red tapes in anti-clockwise circuit to tourist lake via segue to interesting pagoda, then back onto trail to sealed road and downhill to start. Trail mainly flat but some undulations and occasional rocks. Total distance ~5 km”. Highlights: Mysterious large rock artefact, ‘Pagoda with no purpose’, stream with no water, tourist lake and contents, surprisingly gentle trail. Down Down: Roadside area opposite food stalls between bridge and tourist lake turn-off. Refreshments: Rice noodles, BBQ pork, rose apples, watermelon. Pineapple pastries courtesy No idea and daughter (Miri, Borneo). Saigon Chill, softies, mineral water. Circle: Trail rated 9.5/10 “Amazing”, “Excellent”. Hares Chippy, Secs, Bull Ant applauded. Chalk Talk by Secs (edited): Walk 400m to Happy Trail start at Vo Van Kiet school; follow red tape uphill via challenging rock climb to top of peak then across to Cao Dai VN church. Take sealed track down to Hem 444 and turn right towards Ho May Park following red tapes until 600 steps descent to Hung Thang temple, 112 Tran Phu. Through temple grounds, across road and turn right to Ngoc Dung for Down Down. Total distance ~5 km. Highlights: Reaching end of long rocky ascent from Happy Trail. Views of fishing village and shipyards on left of Hem 444 then Vung Tau bay on the right. Watching the setting sun at beachfront Down Down. Down Down: Ngoc Dung restaurant, downstairs beachfront. Refreshments: Saigon Chill, softies, water; banh mi with meat/salad fillings, mango, water melon Circle: 1100th run celebrated. Trail ratings 9.9, 10, 100/10: “Rocky, challenging trail”. Hash Cash: 1 pm registration with Bull Ant and Secs @ VTH3 Kennel: Nắng Vũng Tàu, 5 Lê Ngọc Hân, Ward 1. Total Hashers: 18 Trail: Turn left from Nắng Vũng Tàu along Lê Ngọc Hân, until Hem 105. Follow the road to Vi Ba and then turn right for 100m until ribbons show the way to the start of the power lines trail. From the top follow the ribbon along the ridge of Big Mountain until back on Vi Ba. Follow Vi Ba back to Mr. C’s for Down-Down Highlights: Traditional Lion and Dragon Dance by Hào Khí Đường dance group before the run, spectacular views from the top of the power lines trail. Randy’s legendary pizzas at Down-Down Down Down: Mr. C’s Speakeasy, 3a Lê Ngọc Hân Refreshments: Bia Saigon, softies, water, a variety and pizzas from Mr. C’s wood fired oven Trail rating: 10/10 Circle: Informal circle. Up past Quan yin monastery (aka Kannon pagoda), former French gun battery, first food area, then restaurant on tight bend just before large sign: Quán 2 Nghĩa Chuyên các món về gà (“Specializes in chicken dishes”). Chalk Talk: Secs: “Back down Hem 444 to gun battery, down stairs behind guns to temple. Through the temple then up via jungle to the rear of the start point (‘Special chicken restaurant’). 3 km circular route, follow red tape.” Highlights: Gun battery; Quan yin monastery; old military bunker behind special chicken restaurant; friendly staff: many happy faces and lots of tasty food! Special interest: ‘Quan âm tịnh viện’ is Vietnamese for ‘Quan yin monastery’. Quan yin (Chinese: Guanyin) is a Bodhisattva: “One who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so through compassion for suffering beings”; hence usually called ‘Goddess of Mercy’. Down Down: Special chicken restaurant (see “Trail” above). Refreshments: Bia Saigon, softies, water, BBQ chicken, sticky rice, congee, glass noodles. Trail rating: 10/10 Circle: Informal circle.
