BIG MOUNTAIN - "...and a Petanque Down Down!"

Weather overcast, rain threatened but did not materialise.  Taxis to Hem 444, chalk talk by Faulty Brakes, then up the road past the French cannon battery so popular with tourists, and the ‘underground torpedo’ station.
Through the village with its usual array of happy, laughing children, then along the bush track enjoying views on both sides of Big Mountain – shipyards on our left and Tran Phu and the bay to the right.
We continued on the track until the red arrow pointed the way down to Hem 198.  Some missed the turn-off but still managed to find their way to Ice Water’s Petanque venue: Café Bi sắt.
Duty Ring Master SamSon called the Circle and Ivan rated the trail 8/10.  Three hash virgins were introduced: Mowgli's friend Florin from Romania; Tiger's friend and Vung Tau “local”, Vuong; and Ms Nhan's "spirited" friend Ms Oanh - who decided her Down Down looked better on the Ring Master's head than her own!  Returnees and VTH3 stalwarts Mowgli and Blackhawk were welcomed back, and various Sinners “punished” for alleged “misdeeds” - including Faulty Brakes who gave a "faultless" demonstration of "tube slurping" before the Circle degenerated into yet another "splashing" contest!
We all enjoyed the new Down Down location at Café Bi sắt, with some of the younger set trying their hand at Petanque (google it!).  Owner Ice Water then announced a French-style barbecue starting at 7 pm on Friday.  Cost is a low 70k VND and all Hashers and friends are encouraged to support the event.
Mother Teresa also announced that her birthday party will take place at the Down Down on Sunday, 8 November (run #706) in the Russian Beach Club.  She will organise a trail on that day.
Next week’s trail will include the popular “waterfall” on Big Mountain, and will be set by Basil, Faulty Brakes and "apprentice Hare, Brittany".  Circle will again be held at Café Bi sắt - check our website NEXT RUN box for further details.
We'll meet on Sunday, as usual, at Sao Bien 4 restaurant: 2 pm for 2.30 pm start - in any weather!
