Blessed with a beautiful sunny day, we strolled along Phan Chu Trinh and turned up Hem 220 where Boozer described the trail to us. After a steep climb through the forest, the first stop was the original Lighthouse’s mortar battery of Cap Saint - Jacques, the original French name for Vung Tau. Boozer explained the original lighthouse was located where the Jesus statue is now and that the two bunkers are at an elevation of 75m above sea level where bunker #1 has two guns and bunker # 2 has four guns. These guns supported the original lighthouse structure, their primary aim was to prevent any ships anchoring in the bays around the small mountain and defend any rear attack. From there we continued on the mountain path to join the steps up to the Jesus statue about two thirds of way from the top. We climbed the remaining ~270 steps to the base of the statue where we were able to inspect the second set of guns on the tour. These guns are situated 125m above sea level they were constructed originally in 1914, these guns are 12 inch (30cm) caliber that came from a French Danton battle ship and were hauled up the mountain by hand. The third stop was on a small mound hardly visible to the untrained eye located near the old quarry at the side of the Jesus statue. This gun is the same Danton class gun as the two at the Jesus statue. We then followed the path down the mountain stopping to admire the magnificent view of Back Beach from the side of the mountain. We returned to New Century for the Down Down where, hot English style chips, roast chicken (donated by Hasher Buddha) and cool San Miguel beer was waiting for us. In the circle, returnee Sexy Titties was invited to rate the trail. He said it was a great trail, just challenging enough and interesting as it incorporated historical points of interest. He gave it a score of 9.5/10. Next in the circle were virgins, Ms. Nhu and Ms. Xu, who both said they enjoyed the Hash. There were four sinners this week; Faulty Brakes for going the wrong way - despite being one of the Hares; Radio Wave and Short Wave for stopping for ice cream at the Jesus Statue; and finally, Stubble for yet another footwear incident - the sole of his shoe came off. However, with the ingenious use of the Hash red tape he was able to do a makeshift a repair. Returnees this week has the usual excuses: Oggy - “Lazy”; Tiger - “Working”; Black Hawk -“Busy”; Zidane - “Visa run” Now it was time to give a Hash name to our resident San Miguel promotional girl, Ms. Sam. There were many suggestions and Ms. Sam will now be known as “Mushroom”. Welcome Mushroom!
